Son pitched his first varsity game as a freshman. It was a scrimmage game, but against another team. He started, one inning (all pitchers went one inning each) 2 ground outs, one fly out, no hits, two walks (both on 3-2 counts), no runs. Did pretty good for a freshman against the big boys. Looking forward to next week. He'll go two innings that game. It was cold, but good to be watching games again.
Son pitched in his first varsity scrimmage. He pitched the 5th inning, had a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts and a fly to center. 11 pitches, 9 strikes.

He was 1-2 hitting. In his first AB he looked foolish and struck out on three pitches. In his second AB, he worked the count full, then hit a fastball to the warning track in right center for a double. Probably about 360' and he was way out on the front foot.

I hope his second

Congrats to your son. I know my son played in this Fall league against some guys that were Seniors in high school and proceeded in stiking both of them out the first time he ever pitched from 60 feet. It was a thrill to play against guys almost 5 years older than he was and be able to accomplish those tasks. Tell your son to keep it up and what a great opportunity to play against those older more experienced players than he is.
First scrimmage last night-- FREEZING for us wimpy southerners (40 degrees.)

Highs: some good defense and promising freshman players, a near homerun at centerfield, chemistry in the dugout. Our son was catching very well, and his bat was hot.

Lows: one infield combo experiment was disastrous (all freshmen) and put us in a hole we couldn't dig out of even though we held the other team to zero all other innings. Son tore his oblique and is out for 3-4 weeks. cry
First District game tonight - woo-hoo! It's going to be in the 40's!
We are 2-1 so far. Went into Florida High and took one out of two in Saturday's double header. They had one kid who had four scouts looking at him. Boy, could he rake. Hit a HR against our first pitcher. But 2B struck him out.

17's team has started well. Here are some excerpts from tonights Tampa Trib Article:

Delphey’s Gem Leads Alonso Past Sickles

TAMPA Ray Delphey tossed six innings of two-hit ball and Alonso came up with some clutch hits in a three-run second inning to help the Ravens edge Sickles 3-0 in a Class 6A-District 7 baseball matchup Wednesday night at Sickles.

“It’s good to win our first district game,” Alonso coach Landy Faedo said. “We were a little bit undisciplined at the plate, but we played solid defense and Ray did a hell of a job on the mound again.”

Delphey’s performance was almost identical to the one he turned in during Alonso’s season-opening win over Chamberlain, in which the senior right-hander struck out 11 and limited the Chiefs to just two hits over six innings in a 1-0 win. Delphey faced just two over the minimum Wednesday against Sickles and again struck out 11 while allowing only an infield single to Chase Wilcocks in the first and a double to Josh Dunn in the fourth.

“That’s what we expect from him. He’s a good pitcher,” said Faedo, who added Delphey did a great job preparing for this season. “In all his bullpen [sessions] he’s been right on, and he’s just extremely focused. I guess it’s just a maturity thing now with him being a senior. The tunnel vision is there and outside distractions don’t get to him.”

The Ravens (3-0) scored all they would need in the second. Catcher Backstop-17 brought home the first two runs with a double to right center, and shortstop Tito Martinez (2-for-4) added a two-out, RBI single to cap the inning.

That support was more than enough for Delphey, who continued to hold the Gryphons’ (2-1) bats in check before giving way in the seventh to reliever Jordan Huchro, who retired the side in order to earn his second save of the season.

“He was on,” Sickles coach Bob Pagano said of Delphey. “That’s the best I’ve ever seen him pitch. He was on his game.”

Sickles starter Gregg Cooke also turned in a good game in a losing effort. The senior right-hander yielded only five hits (three coming in Alonso’s three-run second) while striking out 10 in six innings.

And to top off the win tonight, tomorrow at 1:15pm the Mrs. and I will be sitting right behind home plate at the NY Yankees Spring Training home opener.

Rats is right...My son had elbow surgery in Nov so he isn't 100% yet...injurys can be so flustrating...

We won our scrimmage 8-4...their field is jammed between two streets and the sign at the right field foul pole only says '250' and I'm thinking 'too bad we don't have any lefthanders'...After two opposite field HR's I decided that 250 feet was probably an exaggeration.
1st day of JV tryouts was tuesday and I think I did well. I was the only OF to catch every ball and me and the coach seem to get along. He is a great guy to talk too. My running however was pretty poor, Im a tad bit out of shape as its been snowing mainly all winter and I havent been able to run alot. Being a Soutpaw, I struggled over at SS when he asked everyone to do some IF work. I stopped every ball, kept it in front of me, made OK and/or good throws, and had only one One hopper to the 1st baseman.

Yesterday we had the day off. Went and ran a mile, still hurt me!! lol

Today we started back up in wonderful 60 degree weather. I was batting 4th go around and having our field in such bat condition it was hard to keep balanced in mud and having the ball die as soon as it hits off the infield grass, but Im not trying to make excuses I didnt hit well. I think the whole team MAY have hit 6 actual hits. I hit my "run" ball right back into the net and didn't know what to do. I kinda was confused but ran kinda slow because I didnt know what to do. He told me to run to 1st, he grabbed the ball and threw it to first. After every player was done hitting, we had a pow-wow that ALWAYS run out every ball. I wasnt the only one though so I wasn't an outcast. He then hit around 10 balls to OFers. I was the only one who didnt get a lecture, which I kinda frown on because I like to here what I can improve on but that means I did well so I wasn't like crying in a corner or anything. He then told all OFers to on crowhops so we spent around 10 minutes on that while the coach worked on the IFers. We then ran bases. After practice was over I wanted to ask coach what I could improve on. He told me I was doing great, he just wanted to work on crowhops and getting underballs more. He told me how to improve on it, but said we would work on it more so don't sweat it.

I hope I make it, Im hustling more than I ever have and I love every minute of this game. The main thing is I am having fun! I can honestly say last year I did not because of A)My attitude B) My stubborness to even give the coach a chance and C) My lack of wanting to get better; I thought I was good enough. I really realize what I have to do now and I will continue to do the best I can and thats all anyone can ask for Smile
Well, my son started the opener of the varsity season. He is a freshman pitcher. Here's his line:

3IP, 3 runs, 1 earned, 3 hits, 1BB, 5K's.

Even the one ER was questionable as the first batter of the inning hit a pop up between that neither the 2nd baseman or CF really went for. I think both thought the other would get it. Definetely catchable. Batter wound up on 2nd.

Anyway, it was a pretty good outing. Son had never even seen a varsity game before and started this one. Kept his head together and made a lot of good pitches. Only one hard hit ball off a fastball he left up. I'm pleased, coaches were pleased and he is scheduled to pitch again next Wednesday.

We won the game 4-3. Always good to start out with a win.

Very happy the season is upon us.

Yeah, still an earned run, but, you're right, I do see things as a pitcher's dad . We're used to it though. I can't tell you how many times over the years he has given up earned runs on swinging bunts and bloopers over the infield. Still hard to digest, but it's part of the game.

Thanks for the congrats. Looking forward to the season.
Regular season opened on Monday. Son's team won 5 to 1, son hit 2 doubles and played some good defense at 2nd. The team as a whole looked great. We are hosting a tournament this weekend starting this afternoon. Hopefully the weather will be ok. We need to make lots and lots of money to pay for field renovations. We are "a la Janice Joplin" "busted flat in Baton Rouge and waitin on a train".
Great night tonight! Oldest son had a double header and he went 4 for 5 with 2 sac flys and 3 walks. Hit a triple, double and 2 singles. We left the game early to drive back and catch my middle son's highschool game just in time to see him hit a shot up the middle giving us a 2-0 lead (2 rbi's) later 1st pitch of the 7th hit a solo HR to left center.
Probably the best baseball day I have enjoyed!
FRIEND WITH BASEBALL ACADEMY ......

priceless. Tryouts start Monday. My son and three friends are working out tonight and tomorrow night indoors for as long as they want. One of the kid's dad owns a baseball facility. I'm guessing other kids are wishing it wasn't in the 30's so they could get in a workout.
NOT SO PRICELESS

Last night I dropped my son at a local ski resort to go snowboarding. I told him he was out of his mind to go snowboarding when tryouts start Monday.

One of his travel teammates works there. He had the night off and was going to board with my son's high school buddies. He wasn't there. When my son asked the manager if he was around he was informed his teammate broke his arm in two places and the wrist on the other arm Thursday. This kid (a soph) was going to get a varsity tryout at a powerhouse program with the idea he would be the first call up, if needed. Now he's out until the summer.

My son looked at me and said, "No air tonight. Just exercise." The teammate got injured attempting a 360.
First official varsity outting for my freshman son Friday night. Came in to start the fourth with a 2-1 lead and pitched the last 4 innings, 2 hits, 1 BB, 4 K's, 0 runs.

We won 3-1 so he got his first varsity win (I think the starter has to go 4 to get the win) or at least a 12 out save.

He retired his first 8 varsity hitters faced. Got into a little jam in the 7th, but struck out the 5 hole hitter with runners at the corners to end it.
Thanks floridafan...

He did make me nervous especially in the first and third situation with two outs. He got ahead 0-2 and then hit the batter with a high fastball. While I was cursing and scribbling in my score book, a rucus broke out. When I looked up, the umpire was calling the hitter back to the plate for leaning into the pitch. A 5 minute argument with parents screaming and coaches almost getting thrown out took place. Cody just stood calmly on the mound and watched, laughing at times. The opponents coach let things die down and then started the argument again. I think he was playing a game of 'rattle the freshman'.

When it was finally over, the LH was set up for the curve ball (Cody is LHP), but he threw the same pitch he hit him with, high fastball. It got fouled to the left side. Then he went curve away and struck him out swinging.

I asked him why go back to the FB and he said it was the winning run at the plate, the kid was juiced, had to be looking CB and he'd hung three already in previous innings. He didn't want a walk off, so figured he needed to set him up one more time. Coach had called CB, but he shook him off.

I was pretty proud... Kid has a plan...
Had an indoor practice today in VA because it was like 20 out. I hit the ball OK, I always know I can do better so I was somewhat disappointed. We worked on fielding drills and I didnt miss a ball, except for the one coach tried on every player that was very shallow. I was one of the very few who didn't get fussed at which is a plus. We were working on crowhopping and lets just say mine needs some work Smile
