2BMom - great job by your son. That's an excellent night hitting. Grand slams just don't happen every night. Most lifetime players can count their's on one hand.

bbalman - Hang in there, the boys don't have it every night. There are many great nights ahead, look forward to them. He battled and learned and that is valuable. Keeping the ball down, in the zone and moving it around are key. He'll figure it out. If it was easy, I'd still be doing it for money instead of working my day job.

lebanonbb - Sounds like you'll be batting clean-up in another couple weeks. Keep your front shoulder in and keep hitting the ball hard. Great job!

Sorry I don't respond sooner, you've all been so supportive of my son...
17's team continues to dominate through pitching and defense, and timely hitting up and down the line up. All are contributing with many stepping up at different times in different games. Making for very strong team play - they are all depending on each other.

They are 10-0 in the largest classification district in Tampa Bay. Some team stats:

Outscored opponents 68-11, with only 9 earned runs for a miniscule team 0.94 ERA.

Team batting average .353.

6 errors through 67 innings for a fielding percentage of .975.

33 team stolen bases with only 6 attempts against.

This team has been very fun to watch and good to see team captain 17 close out his final high school season with such a hard working group of guys.

As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another - Proverbs 27:17.

Now I'm off to see Ryan Zink pitch a few spring training innings at the Yankee complex, and meet RZ1.
Son played his first regular season varsity game yesterday. The team had a horrible record last year. Opening day they beat a solid program 6-0. Son went 0-2 and a walk. Both balls were hit right on the nose right at infielders. He's been swinging the bat well. He went 3-3 and three walks in the preseason games.

In the field he caught three pop ups he said were all over the place in the wind. One he should have been called off. He had to look down, find the mound, find the ball again and cross over the mound to catch the ball. It was nice to hear another parent say he made a couple of difficult plays look easy. One another he ran to where he thought the ball would get blown to rather than the direction and the fielder it started towards. He was right.

It was great to see the team have a good first game. The pitching was dominant. The defense was solid. I think players got on base in eight of the nine hitting slots. The last few years opposing teams would look at the schedule and check off a win against our high school.

B Dad ... Before conference play starts they play four ranked teams. One down. The opposing team and their parents looked shell shocked as they walked away. During the season they play two more ranked teams. To save pitching for conference games it's possible my son my be a sacrificial lamb for two of the best teams in the state. It will certainly be a learning experience. There were going to be two more ranked teams on the schedule. I think the coach decided six were enough given the last two are nationally ranked.

It was good of the coach to tell an inexperienced player he did his job at the plate hitting the ball hard and not to worry about the results. Also told him chances are the three pops dropped last year. True or not it's a confidence builder. My son has never lacked for confidence (wonder where he gets it?). But who knows how a young player reacts to an 0-fer.

Son comes down with fever during first inning. Went 3, 0 earned runs, several errors allowed runs to score. Fever of 102 when we get home. This thing hit like a ton of bricks in the space of about 10 minutes during first inning. Poor kid looked sick from stands. I was sitting next to coach's wife - told her my son must be sick since her husband hasn't blown a gasket - Kid was no where to be seen. Fell asleep on the bench.

Very strange afternoon.
Congrats to all for a great start to their spring seasons. Sounds like everyone is having positive experiences all around. 55Mom - I hope your son is doing better today!

We started district play yesterday againt Midland High School, at ther place for a DH. GED10 caught the first game and DH'd the second game. We faced Midland ace and Oakland Athletics prospect - (SR,RHP,6'03 200lbs)) Blake Stewart, in the opener. GED10 roped a stand-up 2B off the left centerfield wall off Stewart, follwed by 9-pitch BB, a sac bunt and a FC. We won the first game 12-10 and lost the second game 14-2, GED10 had another BB, his only plate appearance in game 2.

GED10DaD
We won a non-league game 17-5. Gave our freshman pitchers a chance to pitch. Opposing team is a private school that uses the local LL Jr/Sr field as their home field. Coach called it a 'bandbox'. Didn't help them, but out #4 hit two out (and picked up 7 RBI's) and son hit a line drive over the left field fence. So, kind of a cheap HR, but a really well hit ball, so he'll take it...

Next day our #2 threw a shut out as we won 12-0. So were 12-2 and All-Saints week continues tonight (Seems like every game we play is against teams with either Saint or Christian in their name). Smile
One of the great things about team sports is the nicknames teammates hang on each other over flaws and mistakes. It's all in fun. But the names can stick. A high school teammate threw up an airball in his first varsity shot attempt in basketball. Thirty plus years later we still call him Airball even though he became an awesome high school shooter. Today my son earned the name "Firedog" after Sparky the Firedog. He tripped rounding second. No way the seniors are going to let that pass. They said he scored a "10" on his "stop, drop and roll" getting to third.

The kid went 0-1 and four walks. This time he found the right fielder with a line drive. He was upset he fouled off a 3-1 piece of meat before walking one at bat. He batted five times hitting 9th. The team that couldn't hit last year pounded out fifteen plus hits scoring fourteen runs on a ranked team. The team that couldn't win (6-16 last year) is now 2-0 with wins on ranked teams. They're sneaking up on teams. Neither team has started their ace against them. Still waiting for the first hit (0-3). But his OB% is .625.

I loved the nicknames. Almost every kid on my son's travel team had a nickname and it got to where I had to think for a moment if someone asked me for their actual name. There was one kid who joined the team and already had a nickname. It was a month before I learned his real name.

We won again last night in an ugly game...21-7. Score was actually tied 6-6 after 5 when their pitcher ran out of gas and it turned out they really didn't have anyone else. Scored 8 in the 6th and 7 in the seventh. They had simply imploded and our coach asked our batter to just tap it back to the pitcher to end it. Kid just gives it a half swing and hits a soft liner into right for a single. Sometimes nothing goes wrong.... Cool
T-bone my 8th grade son ,has started the last two nights playing Freshman ball for his future high school team. Last night, he went 1-3 as he played left field and his team won in the bottom of the last inning 5-4. Tonight, T-bone played 1st base and pitched 4 innings . 7 strike outs , 2ER, and 2-3 at the plate with 3RBIs. His team won 8-6. A good start for T-bone. If he keeps this up he'll be playing JV soon.
Well, son came back from his last rocky start. Went 6 innings in a region game. Gave up 3 runs, all earned and we won 5-4. He was pretty happy with his performance. Best thing is he was getting the first strike on most batters. Helped alot. He is now 2-0 with two no decisions. ERA - 3.15. Not bad for a freshman pitching varsity in the most competitive region in Georgia. I hope he keeps it up.

For those of you with small guys, have hope. He is not one of those huge man-boy freshmen. He is 5'9", 155 lbs. Hope he has a growth spurt over the next few years, I know size is looked at by the folks at the next level, but so far, the performance is there.

My son made one of the best plays of his life a few days ago and I happened to get a picture of it. He dove fully extended and flagged down a hot grounder and threw out the runner at first. I figured I'd show it off.

His team is 2-3 they just finished playing in a tournament against some bigger schools. They lost 2-1 last night in a really well pitched game that lasted an hour and a half. It was a much better game than the one they played Monday in 38 degree weather,a strong wind and a steady rain. They won 11-10 in 5 innings. They were able to play it in those conditions because the field was all turf except for the mound. We had 5 or 6 errors it was ugly.

I also got to watch Matt Maurer a lefty from North Medford throw a no hitter yesterday afternoon. He throws in the high 80s with a nasty, nasty slider.
It was a treat to watch. He started and won the state championship game as a freshman 2 years ago.
Freshman's second start was not as good as his first.

Got knocked around and ultimately gave up 10 hits, 2 BB's in 6+. Left with the game tied 1-1 (run was unearned) with two on in top 7.

He seemed better from the stretch than the wind-up and kept fanagling his way out of jams (line drive double play, ground ball double play, runner missed a base and was out on appeal). His second run scored (it was very earned) with the relief pitcher in top 7. We scored one in the bottom of 7 to tie at 2-2 and then won 3-2 in the 8th.

My son threw 79 pitches. The other starter threw all 7 2/3 innings and threw 134.

Through 21 innings, 2 wins, 0 losses (although he was close tonight), 1 SV, 17 Hits, 3 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 20 K's with a 0.67 ERA in 5A-I Arizona baseball. His team is 13-3 entering regional play tomorrow night...
Great shot Jdsdad-wow very nice!!!!
Finally son's 1st high school game!!Yeah! It was 40s with a strong breeze (windy city) I was cold with longjonhs and a coat and hat--son played 3B entire game with only 1 ball hit to him said (admitted) he was a little cold. Won 4-1, son batted 3rd and went 2-3 with a double, walk, 1 rbi, 1 run scored (might have scored 2X can't recall) had a good game, team looked solid espically first 1st game and the cold and wind.

Our team just participated in one of the biggest upsets I will probably see for some time. Major crosstown rivalry Forest High School against Vanguard High School on their field.

Their starting pitcher is a legitimate first round pick throwing 94 tonight. About 25 pro scouts in attendance and hundreds of spectators.

We knocked him out in the fourth, my son hit a double to the fence then scored. the game remained tied until the 5th when we took a 2 run lead.

2 innings later they tied it up and it stayed that way until the top of 10 when we scored 8 runs on their 4th pitcher of the night. We won 13 to 5. My guy went 1 for 3 and 2 walks had 2 RBI's and scored 3 times. Played good defense too. It was a total team effort and a huge win. District is now in a 3 way tie with us in the mix!

Son hit two more ropes today. One actually found open space for his first hit. He's hit the ball hard in five of six ab's and has one hit to show for it. All the walks have kept his ob% high. The baseball guy upstairs owes him a few dink hits.

The team that went 6-16 last year is now 3-0. The opposing team had the "We lost to them!" look in the handshake line. My son said one kid actually said in disgust, "I can't believe we lost to you guys."

Finally!! Baseball outside, in Indiana, in March? It doesn't happen too often. Sophomore son had a good outing in our scrimmage. After breaking a bone in his pitching hand and also breaking his collarbone in football this year, we were anxiously awaiting the results. 1-2 with a 2B, 1 BB, 1 HBP, and 1 K, 3 runs scored and 2 SB. Faced 10 batters on the mound. 0 hits, 2 walks and 5 K's. All he could say afterward was that he needed to work on his control. Gotta love it!!
On a side note: L8 Breaking, good luck in championship game. The kid from BL is a freak.
Spring is great isn't it!? Hope all are having a good season so far.

Son (Jr.) is a freshman on JV team that has 12 Soph's back from a 15-3 season last year. Missed first 2 games, both wins, with some nagging issues. First game back last night against a 3-0 team that went 18-0 last season and has 25 game winning streak that goes back to 2007. Soph's have talked about this game for 2 weeks. Coach immediately puts Jr. in as DH in the 4 slot. Yikes! With weather and the nagging issues Jr. hasn't faced a real, live pitcher yet.

We start our ace and so do they. Jr. strikes out in first time up in an 8 pitch AB that he fights back from an 0-2 count before ump rings him up on a pitch mid-shin high. So it goes some times. Jr. ends up 0-2 with 2 BB's & and a hard shot at the 1B. (Jr. bats left, throws right) He goes to a full count in 3 AB's, which is good at this point, because he got to see alot of pitches to get the feel and timing.

Anyway, we proceed to get out to a 6-2 lead by the bottom of the 4th, thanks to some good AB's, a couple timely hits, and some uncharacteristic errors on their part. In the bottom of the the 4th their 5 hitter hits a 3-run HR to make it 6-5.
In bottom of 5th, 6-5, runners on 2nd and 3rd, 1 out, and 4 hitter up, coach calls Jr. in from the bullpen. Big Yikes! Big crowd, music blasting, top team, game on line. He would later say he was nervous, but once he got on mound it was fine. He's always pitched in big games the last few years.

Warms up, proceeds to go 2-0 on 4 hitter. Jr. fights back to full count. 4 hitter (a big LH hitter BTW) then proceeds to foul off 4 straight fastballs. To this point he has challenged 4 hitter with 9 consecutive fastballs. Not 10th pitch-changeup, K swinging. Now 5 hitter (who hit 3-run HR last AB. K swinging on 4 pitches. Jr.'s parents relieved! Team is fired up! Team tacks on a couple more runs and Jr. mows them down the next 2 innings, striking out 3 hitter on 4 pitches to end game for a huge 8-5 victory.

Jr.'s first JV appearance:
2.6 IN 0 R 1 H 0 BB 5 K

Team is 3-0 having only committed 3 errors in 3 games, and offense is just starting to warm up. Now if we can only keep the rain on the non game days!
There are three ways a kid can start his varsity career. He can rack up numbers. He can fall on his face. Then there's my son's experience. After the five walks my son has nine ab's in four games. He's hit the ball on the nose seven times. He's 1-9. Today he drove a ball down the line into the corner to watch the rf'er make a long running catch. In another ab the shortstop leaped and took a liner away. Just to make sure he didn't get too frustrated (sarcasm Smile) he took a called third on a 3-2 pitch that was below his knees. But, you know what they say about "close enough to call."

When my son got in the car his first comments were about being upset the team lost their first game. He doesn't seem frustrated, yet. Then he laughed and said, "The baseball god owes me some dink hits" and "At least I have complete control in the field." He's made some nice plays.

If this keeps up does anyone have a spare chicken to sacrifice? Or should he just go eat at Chick-Fil-A?

RJM,

I was told by someone that the Oakland A's do two batting avgs. for their team. One for actual hits, then they do another for hitting the ball HARD.So lets say your son hits the ball line drives hard right at someone, start to keep a sep. stat, it really helps mentally.
During a college DH in pre season my son was 0-7. 5 of those 7 were line drives to the fences that were all spectacualar catches. His coach put his arm around him and was talking to him for a minute. I later asked my son what did he say to you? he said Just keep hitting the ball hard.
and your son is correct the baseball Gods do owe him a few dinkers. Smile

27's good friend, and fellow freshman playing up, pitched a gem in a Sophomore game yesterday. Went 6 innings, giving up 2 runs, both unearned, and then our big rightie came in and finished off the 7th for a 6-2 victory.

Winning trend continued for the Sophs today as 27 went 7 innings giving up 1 hit and 1 walk while striking out 15 in a 3-1 victory.

2nd game of the double-header, our big rightie sprinkled a few hits over 6 innings in a 6-0 win.

The coach of the opposing team was an assistant coach with 27's super-league team. He pulled 27 aside, after the 1st game, and asked him to allow his batters more than 2 hits the next time. 27 answered back, "It was one hit, coach, the other was my error." His former coach came back with: "My guys need to hit the cage!" Big Grin

I love baseball!
