2 inches of snow on ground--a little late even for Illinois--I believe our games will be cancelled for a couple days--was sunny and high 50s sat--more games cancelled then played so far.
Not really HS baseball but the closest we get these days as CASon has yet to throw a pitch this season.
He attended a college camp and threw to 7 hitters. They were using the start with a 1-1 count format. He got off to a slow start, not surprising for someone who hasn't faced hitters for six months. He missed with the first pitch, took a bit off the second pitch to throw a strike and gave up a clean ground ball single. He struck out the next hitter then plunked the third hitter with a curve he got around. He got the next hitter to ground out on a change and then struck out the next three hitters with the only ball out of the strike zone being a fastball up to set up the change.
His velocity wasn't where we were hoping as he was all over the place velocity wise on the first couple hitters and then when he started getting lined in he was only 84-86 on a JUGS, mostly 84. This JUGS reads 1 mph faster than a Stalker. On the other hand he had some movement, was able to stay down in the zone and the change despite being a bit firm was very effective. The curve was so-so but he did get his last strikeout with it.
About 15 pitches with 10 strikes. Not bad for the first outing in six months.

2010 son had a great game this past weekend. Played #10 rated team in the classification just under his (he plays 5A in Colorado). 2010 hit a dbl, triple, and a grand slam, just missed the cycle and had 6 RBI's! Actually, truth be known, he really did hit for the cycle but when one team is up by a bunch (final score was 36 to 11 in five innings) the umps tend to give the other team the benefit of the doubt. Got called out at first on an infield grounder to short deep in the hole. He beat the throw but oh well... will have to save that honor for another day! Was fun just being there to watch it all happen. What a joy!
Wow - that is awesome J23! Six RBIs is a special day indeed.
Son is on spring break this week and took a school sponsored trip to Italy and Greece. He and the LF and 3B took their gloves and a couple of balls 'just in case'. Heard that they played a game on the beach using a piece of driftwood for a bat.
No score to report. It was just plain, old-fashioned fun....

That's relly cool Hawk! Probably no adults and lots of fun!
2012 son just got asked up to Varsity for out of town tournament this weekend. Hopes to pitch Friday- I hope the weather holds out.
Good luck to your son, Lefty!
2B also just got back from a spring break trip. The team went to New Orleans and played against Holy Cross (L 7-4), Cardinal Newman (W 16-0), and Brother Martin (L 5-2). They played on fields at Delgado CC and the University of New Orleans. I was stuck here in Gainesville at work, so I can't tell you how far his base hits went But he hit .334 for the trip. One of our players got hit in the face with a 90+ fastball during the Holy Cross game, and spent his first New Orleans night in the emergency room. His eye was swollen shut for a couple of days, but he will be fine.
The team took a Katrina tour, which had a deep impact on 2B, and had an interesting time walking down Bourbon Street as well. It was a worthwhile trip.

Won 21-0--3 touchdown lead--surprized by score thought other team was a lot better. Son played 3B first 3 innings left we were up I believe 16-0, was 2-3--4rbi--double.
Just to show that a thread like this doesn't have to be just for us to document the GOOD games our kids play (tho I sure hope to be able to report some of THOSE soon too! )... If you play this great game long enough, you’re eventually going to have one of “those” games. My freshman son did last night.
His team played a school in the same city as us, that they’d already faced in a scrimmage AND a non-league game this season. Still, they pitched the same kid against us for a 3rd time. Our pitcher threw a great game for us, going the whole 7 innings and only allowing one run. He throws a nice curve for a strike and really looked poised and in control. Our team just didn’t hit, only getting 3 hits the whole game. My son got one of them, a bending liner in the wind down the RF line.
So we were still ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the 7th. Their first batter hit a routine GB to my son at short, which he fielded fine, but then one-hopped it past the first baseman for an error. Funny, an inning or two earlier, a teammate’s parent turned to me and said “Kevin scoops everything at short, huh?”. (He made 5 or 6 putouts in game 1 and a few already this game, so he has been solid and I’m confident he’ll continue to be.) Pitcher eventually walks a batter and we have 1st and 3rd, no outs. Runner on 1st steals 2nd uncontested. Next batter hits a single that scores 1, tying the game at 2 and putting the winning run on 3rd. Our pitcher gets the hitter to hit a GB a couple steps to my son's right, but for some silly reason, he doesn’t backhand it; instead, he goes down on his knees, bobbles it, then throws late to home from his knees. Game over.
Not to make excuses, cuz they’re not needed, it’s part of baseball… but my son needs to focus better on things he can control. He later said that during the throwing error, he could hear the other team encouraging the batter “C’mon, you’re gonna beat it, almost there!” and he got anxious. Ugh. Then on the final play, before it, his coach told them “Ok, nothing gets by you, knock it down”. Kevin said that’s why he didn’t try to backhand it; if he missed it, he didn’t want to get in trouble. Man! I later told him that he just needs to play “his” game and not worry about consequences. Break the game down into each play, each pitch and focus on that; let the outcomes be what they will be. But being my son, I know it’s easier said than done to not overthink things.
Poor kid was devastated last night. Two of his friends – the pitcher and catcher – were both kind enough to call him last night and tell him to shake it off. I just hope he doesn’t press too much today trying to make up for it. (They play again today.)

Sorry to hear about that Sandman. It's tough to watch, but it does happen to everyone. I'm sure every one of us on this board can relate to something like this happening - more than once. Hang in there and keep encouraging your son, he'll be fine next time he hits the field. Soon enough, he'll be the hero with a game saving play or game winning hit.
Sandman, that's baseball. I'm sure your son will be fine. He wouldn't be at SS to begin with if he didn't have the right stuff, physically and mentally. Although kids can be quite dejected following a tough game, they usually get over it very quickly (quicker than the adults!). The best part is, he gets to play again today!
Wow, Sandman. What a tough game. They've all had them, though. bballman is right - your son's day will come. What doesn't kill them makes them stronger - and better.
Out of respect for deldad (Nick Adenhart's Dad) - I am going to temporarily unfeature these topics at the top of the forum. Thanks for your understanding and please continue to update.
Season finally got under way today. Son pitched 7 innings today. 0 runs, 1 hit, 3 bb's, 17 k's. Great way to start the season.
ExPro,
Hope your kid is happy with the publicity on "the hsbaseball web" and the local newspaper. In Massachusetts weather, your son threw a full 7 innings and had 17k's, with 3 walks? If you do the math, seems to me he must have thrown at least 115 pitches. The strikeouts and walks alone equal 63 pitches and I know he didn't strike all of them out in 3 pitches or walk them all in 4 pitches. Championships are not won in April and kids don't go to college or pro ball with ragged out arms. Why did he need to throw this many pitches in his first outing of the year?

Temps today in the NE were hi 50's/lo 60's
And perhaps the young man has been working all off season and is in tip top condition---with a shutout and one hit given up he obviously did not struggle

While I'm no fan of hard pitch counts, check this one out. 189 pitches for this HS pitcher:
http://www.philly.com/philly/s..._tops_Woodstown.html
Haines walked 10, struck out seven, and hit four batters, while allowing five hits
If I'm a HS coach and this is my ace, I want him healthy for the conference and state tournaments so he can be stretched out some if needed in tournaments.
Sidd,
Pitch count was 105. 7th inning was 9 pitches. 3rd inning was 3k's, 10 pitches. Not my call as to whether coach pulls him out or not. My job is to sit there, watch, and cheer on the team. He has been on a throwing and conditioning program since December, that had him game ready on first day of tryouts. This wasn't his first outing, just the first counter of the season. It was also one of the warmest days we will see this April.

Zomby,
I saw this on a local forum. Might be the stupidest thing I've seen so far. Kid wasn't pitching very well in a high scoring game. Their is no excuse for a kid to throw 189 pitches no matter what the temperature.

Won 5-1--son pitched 6 innings--6ks--1walk--1hbp(ouch!)--1 run--0 ERA--1 hit, looked sharp! On the other hand went 0-4 at plate--got a knew bat for his birthday from auntie (Demarini CF3) right before game--probably should have taken some bp before using it--but then agian probably just one of those days at the plate. Thankfully a couple boys had a good day at the plate. Very good team play looked good overall.
FINALLY - our first game of the season. son's team won 5-3. son pitched 5 scoreless, 6K, 2H, 1HBP...but an overall great team effort.
it was so rewarding to watch a team that was very young last year, mature and play to their potential! i love this game......

Son's team played four games in a Spring break tournament. All the teams team played were real good. Very good pitching. Team went 1 for 3. In same tournament last year they did not win a game. Good to see improvement. Son pitched the only game we won. He had a complete game with 9 strikeouts, one walk, 4 hits and one unearned run. Bat was silent until the 3rd game where he broke out going 3 for 4 with a grand slam at the bottom of the sixth bringing us withing one run. Bottom of the 7th got the lead off batter on but could not close the deal.
Wow, we play a lot earlier. JV playoffs start Saturday. We play a team that we're 2-0 against in the 1st round. Should be exciting.
Bad news is our team lost today 13-1. Good news is my son got his first varsity at bat and got a single. He is a freshman and has been a starting pitcher, but has always had a DH hitting for him. Got a chance today and came through. Because of that, we have a non-region game tomorrow that he was not going to go to. After the game, coach told him to come and get some AB's. Hope he comes through tomorrow too.
Son's team has lost 5 of 7 games played by one run in the bottom of the last inning!!!! ARRGGHHH!
so far so good, sons team 4-0,southpaw son is 2-0, pitched 11 innings so far with 1 earned run,15 K's. First game , his team was up big so his coach took him out after 4 innings to let others throw a few innings and save him some extra early season pitches. I am making it my business to attend as many of his final HS season games as possible. Rain has been the only downer and 2 games were already postponed. Hope everyone is enjoying their HS season.
The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly
Rained out Friday. Rained out Monday.
Tuesday-Cloudy, 43 degrees, 25 mph winds. Football weather.
JV team wins 13-6 and is now 5-1.
Jr., the freshman, goes 3-4 with 2 2B's.
Pitches 2 innings in relief. Comes in 6-5 game, pulled when we blow it open. 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 3 K.
Wednesday-Clouds & Sun, 53 degrees, 20 mph winds. Some improvement.
Team wins 14-9. Down the whole game. Trailing 9-7 in top 7th, scored 7 to take an exciting victory.
Jr. 1-3, 2 RBI, BB. Couple nice plays on D at 1B.
Thurday-Sunny, 63 degrees, 10 mph winds. Now we're talkin' baseball weather!
Team loses 7-3. Left offense at home, as we only had 4 hits. 3,4,5 hitters 1-7. Jr. 0-2, BB, 1st K since 1st AB of season. He was completely confused about strike zone (we all were).
Jr. Came straight from doctor to game. Has bad sinus infection.
You gotta love this game!

We had our first scrimage on Wednesday. He went 1 for 2 with a walk. his one out came with runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs. the coach gave him the bunt sign twice and he missed it. Now an 0-2 count coach gives it to him again just to make a point. bunted it foul and headed to the duggout.
No mental mistakes, were not perfect and we are only human, but that doesn't mean we can't try to be perfect.

Son threw 7 innings Thursday night. Game ended up going 10 innings and we won 4-3. He gave up 3 runs, one each in the first 3 innings. Got the last 14 in a row and was stronger in the 7th than the first. Threw 98 pitches and was begging to pitch the 8th. 7 hits, 1 BB, 5 K's, 3 Runs, 2 earned.
Luckily the coach doesn't listen to freshmen.
Through his first 32 IP, 27 H, 9 Runs, 6 ER, 9 BB, 29 K's, ERA of 1.31. He's 2-1 with a save.

Mike has started out the season benifiting from a winter of hard work. In the first game of the season he was 2-4 and hit a solo homerun in the top of the 7th to lead his team to victory. In game 2 he was 5-5 with a walk and collected his 100th Varsity hit, a 3-run HR to bring his team back from a 2-0 deficite. He ended the day with 6 Rbi's.
He needs 9 more hits to break his older brothers record and already holds the school record for games played, runs, stolen bases, total bases and assists. It's been quite a 4 year career.

Had 2 games canceled last week because of rain. I have a game tuesday at Lee High School. Some may remember that last year we played a double header in a snow storm in which I struck out with a runner on 3rd that would've sent the game into extra innings in which we could've gotten our first win of the season. I'm pretty excited to go back and see what I can do.
Good luck on Tuesday and let us know how it goes!
Thanks JT! I will!
Coach has been working on my swing all week and I hope to do well with it. I am not comfortable with it yet as he has taken away my load from my swing and wants me to go straight towards the plate. He has also messed with my hands which I believe is going to be a BIG adjustment because I am barely gripping the bat now, I am use to having it pretty tight.

Won 7-6 and lost 7-6 good games both won in last atbats--were down 7-3 came back to 7-6 and runner thrown out trying to advance to third, they made a nice play. Son was 0-3 with walk and rbi--2 outs were hard hit so he is ok--made 2 great plays at 3rd. Rested 2nd game as coach let bench players get some reps, they all did well.
Varsity took 2nd place in tournament this weekend! Freshman son closed last two innings of last game struck out 4. Even better than that he got to be a part of a High School Special Needs players dream of playing in a real game.
Unfortunately, we are struggling with an 8 game loosing streak. This includes three 1 run games, but also three 10(+)run-rule train wrecks. Last night we lost 14-7 to the #1 team in District 2-5A, after giving up 6 runs on 4 fielding errors in the 1st inning.
GED10 went 1 for 2; 2B, BB, SACfly, 1RS, 1RBI. Hopefully it will get better, we are very young, especially MIF and LF. GED10DaD

Yeah, that's tough Gun. We have lost our last two 13-1 and 13-6. Not pretty. Have a tough game tonight against the #1 team in our region. My son is pitching, so I hope we give up fewer runs than we have been. Good luck in your next game.
BBMan - Thanks, good luck tonight, BBson is going to wreck'em!!GED10DaD
Son's second game was yesterday. They won 1-0. Son pitched and had 7IP, 0 Runs, 2 Hits, 2 BB's, 14 K's. Team is now 2-0.
