Highland Park 13 Mather 1
AJ Nathan hit his second HR of the season on the games first pitch; Freshman Jason Goldstein hit his second home run of the season. Junior James McCraren goes to 2-0 on the young season.
HP now 7-1. We're almost back at full strength, as Menke gets back from China tonight and one senior is now back in action after missing the first 7 games.
It was a beautiful day for baseball as Highland Park took on Buffalo Grove in a doubleheader at Elfstrom Stadium today. Great, great games and complete opposite of each other.
In the first game, Highland Park was held to only 3 hits in a sparkling performance by the BG pitcher. However, Anthony Kopp threw is second straight shutout, allowing only 4 hits in a 1-0 Highland Park victory. The damage was done on a 4th inning home run by Tyler Goldstein for the games lone run. Kopp is now 4-0 on the season. The other hits were a single by AJ Nathan and a double by Jon Menke.

In game 2 both teams found the lumber as they combined for at least 25 hits.
Highland Park once trailed 8-3 before they tallied one in the 4th, 2 in the 5th and tied it in the 6th, scoring 2 more as Jon Menke tied the game with a single. Brian Evans got the game winning at bat in the bottom of the seventh when, with a man on third and 2 outs, Evans hit a shot to short but a high throw to first caused Evans to be safe as the winning run crossed the plate. Junior James McCraren picked up the victory in relief of starter Rick Johnston.
HP is now 9-1 on the year.

HP 1 BG 0 at Elfstrom Stadium.....following up on BBFan58 summation of game 1 of the DH......JP Kullick, the BG pitcher did a very fine job working his way out of a couple of jams.....Goldstein also flashed the leather at 2B snareing a hot smashed rising line drive off the bat of BG 2B Ryan Nisbet that was heading for the gap in right center......but the most exciting part of the game was BG's 7th inning rally and HP's subsequent rally snuffer. Two singles with one out, one of them a brilliant piece of hitting by pinch hitter Steve Pollakov found BG threatening with runners on first and third with one out. BG tried a delayed walf off the base with the runner on first looking for a balk or an oppurtunity to score from 3B but the experienced Kopp did not flinch. BG coach geussed right, on a 1-1 count and started the runner on first as Kopp let go the slowest breakest ball of the day hoping to set up second and third one out one run behind situation...unfotunetley for BG, HP catcher AJ Nathan showed again why he is one the most highly touted 09's in the area....he unleashed a missile to 2B that I thought I had no chance of throwing out the athletic looking runner on 1st.....not even close. Kopp retired the next hitter on a routine ground ball to end the game. Hats off to both teams for a well played game at a great venue.
