Talk about a culture shock....Saturday, I was in the middle of the West Tennessee country--surrounded by the beauty of the white, glistening snow, the bare trees, the rolling hills (it truly reminded me of my former home in Wisconsin), the warmth of the Fungos.....and then yesterday, I drove my younger son to his job in downtown Chicago---surrounded by the dreariness of the gray, speckled white (from salt) pavement, the flat roads, the tall buildings, the CARS! even on a Sunday...

Very good point. What I was trying to get at with the bus analogy is the end result being the same, not the specific physics involved. Maybe a better analogy would be jumping off a 100 foot cliff and landing on pavement vs jumping off a 150 foot cliff. The end result is going to be the same. That is all I was saying. From a physics standpoint, does it really matter what getting hit with a ball traveling 105 mph will do when the starting point of 98 mph will cause the same devastating injury?

I felt proud of myself, the way you said I would, that I didn't drink and drive, though some friends said I should. I made a healthy choice, and your advice to me was right, the party finally ended, and the kids drove out of sight. If I'm reading this right, then no 8th graders made the team. So he was merely denied an opportunity to "play up." Sounds like the door is open for next year and he generally made a great impression. Lots of positives to take from the experience. That being said, it also sounds like both you and he know what he needs to do to be ready next year. Hustling during tryouts is a great thing. Doing the off season work to be ready for tryouts is what could make the difference between just making...

I don't think it's crazy of you to presume these things. Big kids are generally assumed to be that way. And unfortunately, tryouts in the gym generally work one way. Coaches can't see how a kid actually plays the game. They can't tell if a kid has good instincts or is a good baserunner. Our head coach (summer ball) during games he repeatedly demands the other kids on our team watch how my son takes a lead, gets a secondary lead, reads pitches to steal second, takes extra bases, etc. Though...

When I had just about finished and feeling rather proud of myself because this was the first time I'd ever changed a tire, an ambulance flew down the ramp, sirens blaring, and skidded to a stop at the stop sign. A great coach coach and instructor I once had told me to always answer questions if asked--if you cannot answer then say so-- All I did was ask a simple question By the way a wall normally has mortar joints which can cause a ball to rebound differently with every toss not to mention the joints in the ground pavement it hits---snow man it works great for infielders learning toreact to bad and erratic hops

Yes,..sandlot ball still exists,..and in places you perhaps never thought of. By Staff Sgt. Stacey L. Re: Foul Pole Rule

MidAtlanticDad ·
IMO, it's a foul ball. Ground rules are for non-standard items like pavement, trees, etc., or if the pole was tilted and should not be used to judge. The foul pole is standard and denoted an extension of the foul line. The webbing is not standard and is just supposed to help the umpire judge fair from foul. In this case, the webbing is clearly outside of the foul line so it doesn't need to be called out as special. Having said that, I think the coach should have mentioned it during ground rules.

Cast the net wide. Plenty of opportunities outside of DI. If you aren't getting DI interest at this point, there's a reason. Focus on what you can control. Keep academics a priority. I know of plenty of kids that had great collegiate careers at something other than DI. Keep pounding the pavement that lead to the right fit. GL in 2018!

If your son is a 2018 and seeking four year college opportunities, it's very late in the process for most schools. A key aspect of the overall process is to develop a vetted list of schools...vetted academically and athletically. That means fishing in the right pond, i.e., where the player really fits with respect to baseball and academics. Not wishful thinking, but schools and programs that make sense. That list can and should be vetted not just by the player and parents, but by independent...

Were you doing these same things over the last few years and was there interest/engagement from colleges or not? Will he walk on and take a chance? Will he play anywhere to get on a team (D2) with the goal to move up from there?

Re: 2018 Pounding the Pavement...

Not sure you can move up from DII once you have enrolled and played at that level. Maybe a Juco to start and move up from there or a 4-2-4 scenario if the walk on DI doesn't work out. Based on the info here, it sounds like Juco, DII, DIII or NAIA are the his best options. Walking on to a DI without a sniff of be recruited is just asking for failure. IMHO.

Formula has to be — reach out to as many coaches at as many different levels that you even might be interested in. Send them a short email and a video and see what comes back. I would advise though against thinking that JUCO is somehow easier than D1 for recruiting. In most cases, our experience was that kids looking at JUCO were going there as a way to prepare for D1, either academically or athletically, not because they couldn't have played at a D2 or D3.
