This last week as been probably the roughest week of my life so far. I am a sophomore in High School and was trying out for Varsity. We had 3 sophomores and 8 freshman come out to tryout along with upperclassmen who were automatically on the team; we had a total of 20 guys trying out. Simple rule: Upperclassman play over underclassmen. For a little more than a week(we started a week late) we had tryouts with NO outside practices. The weather was poor, but if we started a week earlier we could have had around 4 outside practices. So for 7 days we worked in a batting cage getting anywhere from 1 to 15 pitches, tee work, soft toss, and mild fielding work while a coach threw a ball 4 feet in front of us. Overall, I did OK. I didn't do anything special, but neither did anyone else honestly, and I thought I only had one really poor day of tryouts. I was cut along with another sophomore, and bumped down to JV. All freshman have the last name to help them get on the roster. This last name stuff has occurred to me in the past, but this one really hit me hard. It hit my family harder. Most of all it hit my pride to have to walk into that school everyday, and see the faces of all the people who made it over me. I wasn't in the best shape, I wasn't a star out there, but I was respectful and hardworking and that's more than what most of those freshman have. Obviously that isn't important when it comes to this town. I'm at an all-time low. The coach told me he bumped me down because he needs me to get the reps and he believes I can be a starter for him next season, and he said it repetitively that he truly meant it. The outfield had 5 seniors in the area, along with a 4 year starter and a prospect who is D1 bound. So, with a lack of pride, but a positive response from the head varsity coach, I am playing on JV for another year. I just don't believe I deserve this, it truly makes me wish I wasn't here sometimes. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy.
Lebanonbb,

Just keep working hard. Some roads are tougher than others but as long as you have the passion and you keep working hard in your craft you will arrive to the same destination.

Good Luck this season and I am looking forward to some really good summer stories from you. If you could, play some competitive club ball on top of your possible HS BB Summer program.

I espect a different story next season. Also, be ready to be pulled up late in the season especially if you are doing good.

I appreciate the kind words. The high school team doesn't have a summer program, but I play on a traveling team based out of Knoxville,TN. As for getting called up, it won't happen he doesn't call players up and down. If your there, your stuck there,
lebanonbb,
A kid at my son's school played JV as a junior, and went on to sign for over a million after a successful college career. A lot of very good players play JV as sophmores. It sounds like you've got a coach who is looking to develop you even if it means not having quite as good a varsity squad this season.

Hold your head up. At my son's school, there is only one sophomore on Varsity. There are Juniors on JV. Most sophomores don't make Varsity around here as they usually play on JV with a a couple freshman and a few juniors.

Sounds like you have two years on Varsity ahead of you. Work hard and become the player your coach believes you can be. It's better to play every game at the JV level than to ride the pine on Varsity.

lbb,

Sounds like you've got a chip on your shoulder - GOOD! Keep it there and use it as motivation to go out and DESTROY every JV team you face this year. Be the hardest working player on your team, be the best player on your team, be the best teammate on your team, be the coach's dream player. Your coach(es) probably know your disappointed and will be impressed with your maturity if you keep your mouth shut and work hard. Only YOU can decide whether your going to use this disappointment as an excuse to mope around with a bad attitude, or use it as motivation to get even better.

From reading your post, some of the roster decisions weren't fair - well guess what, life's not fair. What do you do when the ump calls strike 2 on a low & away pitch you thought was a ball? You can give up on the at bat, or get back in there and keep battling. This is the same situation on a bigger scale - that's why baseball is such a great game; it can teach you these life lessons - if you let it!

WAG!
If you're in Phoenix during Easter weekend you may want to venture over to the Diamondback Chase Field Saturday April 3rd. The 2- time State Champions Mingus Marauders will be playing @ Chase field right after the D-Back-Cubs game at 3:30 to 4:00pm. Two feature players for Mingus SS/P Shaun Mc Carty currently hitting .615, great defensive skills and a strong arm. Centerfielder Hunter Zwart provides the power and the 6.6 -6.8 speed as lead off hitter. Hunter is currently hitting .444,3HR and slugging %of.889 Mingus also has some up and coming Sophmores and Jr's. There is no cost to attend the HS game at 3:30. Come enjoy the fun and sit in the big buck seats for free!!

This is called paying your dues. At least as a sophomore, you still have a shot at varsity as a junior. My son's jv coach told him he should be competing for an OF spot on varsity in his junior year but come opening day, he was on JV. All he did was tear up jv ball to the point where the varsity coach had to notice. The varsity was struggling to score runs so his later callup was even more baffling. The teams his last 2 years were loaded with seniors and had 24 graduate including his class so spots for underclassmen weren't available and the juniors who did make varsity didn't play much at all and and a couple wound up playing on jv anyway. Last season, with 13 seniors graduated, 11 from the previous season and three not returniing, competition was wide open for underclassmen. His coach preferred playing seniors and in many instances, it's the right move, but not always. At least until my son was called up mid-way thru junior year to get some game action, he played every inning on jv instead of rotting on a varsity bench. This turned off few juniors who didn't return senior year. His senior year, he was a starter, sured up the outfield with his solid play (only 1 error over two seasons), became the #3 hitter and a key run producer who could get it done with the game on the line.

Yea, coaches do miss the boat when they got a player right under their nose but all you can do is go out there and make the coach look dumb by not picking you to make the varsity.

Up here in the Northeast, baseball just started up this week. Son who is a freshman LHP will be a swing player this season. He will play positionally on the freshman team and be called up to pitch for the JV squad. He is excited for the opportunity to prove himself against the older players.

Regular season starts 2nd week of April, right around the time you are all finishing up your seasons!! Big Grin

Hey, that's pretty cool, Krakatoa! I'll bet he did it in those spiffy black pants and blue socks, too. Smile

It's been a crazy week so I haven't had a chance to check in. Good luck tomorrow night to 27! Good luck this season to redsoxson! And congrats to bballson!

We've had 2 more district games, 2 more district wins. The team is now 12-1, 9-0 in the district. We have another district game tonight, and another tomorrow afternoon. 2B continues to illustrate what happens when you take a contact hitter and put a few muscles on him. Smile He's still leading the area in RBIs, and 7th or better in all other hitting categories.

I continue to do my thing too - keep things interesting in the press box! On Tuesday, after working on a $10.2M budget at work (which completely fried my brain), I announced our #1 district rivals as the Bulldogs, instead of the Tigers. They had Tigers written across their jerseys. Razz

This past Saturday was our golf tournament fundraiser, and that was another adventure. 2B had a flat tire, so the team had a little mid-morning entertainment. They couldn't get the tire off. Four or five guys tried to take it off, and it wouldn't budge, so I called the Honda place and asked if there was some magic potion. The guy said "kick it." So our RF kicked it, and off it came. 2B had plenty of help the rest of the way.

That is a funny story Big Grin

Several years ago, Kenny Smith (current TNT analyst) was in town to play the Cavaliers as a member of the Houston Rockets. Kenny of course played collegiately at illustrious North Carolina. When they announced Kenny's name during the pre-game, they said "And now starting at guard, from Alcorn State - Kenny Smith!" Well, you would have thought someone had shot a gun at Kenny. He was openly annoyed, shaking his head, and pointing at the PA announcer. It totally affected his game that night imho as he played poorly in that particular game. Moral of the story? Those PA announcers might be able to help their teams if they happen to misstate something at the proper time Big Grin
Another game in the books. I was home sick, but the mrs. was there and texting me updates Wink. First text from my wife: "3 up, 3 down on 4 pitches." Son went 4 innings, giving up 1 run in an 11-1 5 inning win. Varsity now sits at 8-1 with Region play starting next week.

2Bmom, congrats to 2B, and I'm glad they figured out the tire situation.
Congrats 27. Sounds like a great outing.

Bballson got his first region start. Went 6 giving up 3 singles. One of them was an infield single and one was a bunt he fielded, but 2nd baseman didn't cover 1st. Would have been an easy out. Not a bad way to start. Should start against the undefeated #1 team in the state next Friday. Hope he's up to it. He lost to them last year 1-0 and they are a big rival. He's looking forward to it. I'm a little more nervous.
The "nerves" are still there, aren't they, even after all this time and even as they have more and more success! Go figure because, as you say, they don't seem to be fazed by anything!

Congrats to all and isn't it great having an outlet at HSBBW to advise when you need it or just plain brag a little when the urge arises!

Prime Jr hit his 3rd Homer in as many consecutive games (all Region tilts) and now leads the Region with six. I don't care about the bombs so much but am glad to see he is "driving" everything which is a necessity at the next level.

Luck to all!!

Son getting off to a great start. His team won their region tourney winning all 5 games. Son went 10 for 21 with 2 HR,10Rbi's.13 runs scored,4 walks and 2 stolen bases. Six of his 10 hits extra bases. 2HR-4 2B hits. Plus he went 6 innings on the bump allowing 3 hits 2BB and 5k's. Great start for the 2010 season. They are looking good to 3peat as State Champs 4A Div. Got to love this game!!
I have 2 boys on varsity in Kingwood tx. Kyle is a senior going to texas state in the fall. My other son jack is a sophomore. Early during tryouts the head coach asked me if I thought Jack could contribute as a sophomore pitcher. I told the coach
it would probably be better if he asked that question to Jack. Jack said he was ready and wanted the ball. As off today he leads the staff in victories with a 4-0 record. His era is under one and he has been gunned at 87 on the stalker. Kids know when they are ready at least jack did and he told the coach. Kids are more resilient than we think and I know my boys thrive on the competition

How many baseball players does it take to change a tire?

One to call the Honda dealer and another to kick it.
2nd varsity start this weekend for LTSon, 2nd win. Complete game 2 hitter. He was disappointed not to start on varsity this year, but the 4 JV starts he got made him a better pitcher. I don't think he would have started the varsity season with the confidence he now has. Got to give the coaches a lot of credit for how they have handled him. A little success this year should really give him a positive attitude going into his junior year!
Up here in the soggy and cold northeast we are still in the practice and scrimmage mode for the next two weeks. Son got called up to pitch this Saturday in a JV scrimmage (30 degrees at game time with a wind chill in the 20's). He pitched the 3rd and 4th innings. He gave up one infield single, 4k's and 1 BB. Should have been 6 up and 6 down but the last K of the 4th inning was a changeup in the dirt and the 1st baseman dropped the throw to first Roll Eyes . Which of course led to the walk and infield single. But he showed the coach he could battle out of the jam which impressed the coach. Hopefully he gets the ball again this Friday if the fields dry up in time from the soaking we are getting the next 2 plus days!!
Congratulations, gameday! That's awesome.

We play our second game of the week tonight. The team is 15-1, 12-0 in the district. 2B hasn't been player of the game, hasn't been mentioned, honorably or otherwise, in the paper's Athlete of the week. But he has, with stealth and consistency, placed himself fourth or better in the area in all hitting categories, and with a BB to K ratio of 16-4. A great junior season. Yet another district matchup tonight, and then we're off until next week.
Just curious...if the HS teams from the warmer climates have played 10-15 games prior to 4/1, how many games are allowed prior to playoffs? How many pitchers do the HS teams carry?

In PA, our public schools play 2 official scrimmages and then open up a 20 game season on 3/29 (weather permitting!). 3 games per week essentially through mid-May and then playoffs. I'm not sure there are alot of teams in PA with enough pitching to get through a longer season...just curious
In North Carolina you are allowed 2 scrimmage games. A max of 24 regular season games. If your conference has a conference tourney they do not count towards the max limit. Then the hs play offs. Practice starts the first Monday after Feb 15th and games start around the end of Feb each year. Once the conference season starts you play 2 conf games a week and usually around one non conf game a week. Most weeks its 3 games a week. Sometimes you will have 4 when you reschedule for rain outs etc.

Every team is different just like in your neck of the woods I am sure. Some have several pitchers some do not. What I have found is #1 will get the start for the better conf game that week. #2 will get the start for the second conf game. I have always had at least five pitchers and a couple of more guys that can get us by in those non conference games.
Gotta love HS baseball!

Last night was so much fun. The first thing that happened was that I went over to get the lineup from the opposing coach. I asked him what their record was so I could put it into my script. He gave me their record, then said "Wait! I already put a loss in there for tonight!" I joked with him that it was anyone's game, but #5 was gonna get his hits. He asked #5's last name. I told him, and he smiled and said, "I read the scouting report. He's gonna get his walks." So much for stealth. Smile Sure enough, 2B was 0 for 1 with a HBP and a walk. But he gave a clinic at 3B and got his 3rd save, so it was a good night.

The next thing was that the game was sponsored by a local company, which also sponsored a Cal Ripken team, probably 8U from the looks of them. One of the little guys threw out a first pitch. The company representative was a little old lady. I happened to have some swing on my iPod, so I played a little Diane Schurr between innings ("Alright, Okay" for you DS fans). Probably the first time Diane has been played at a baseball game! The rest of the night, I had the Cal Ripken team dancing between innings. It was great.

It was the best game of the season - the opposing team was well-coached, played hard, and had a lot of heart. And we won, 4-0. What a great night!
MadDogPA, here in Ga, tryouts start Feb.1. We are allowed 1 scrimmage game, then 26 regular season games before playoffs. Regular season ends by May 1. We have 10 teams in our region and play each 2x, so that is 18 region games. We play 1 non-region during spring break and the others prior to the region games. Region started March 17 and yes many of them were freezing cold!! 3 games per week unless rainouts, then we have to make up with 4 in a week. We basically have 3 starters, so they go once per week. Then several other relievers.

Wow - sounds like ya'll are having a great season! Congratulations Smile I don't know about where you are located, but around here, a kid doesn't get much mention for his numbers. It's more about the "hype." But, that's the great thing about baseball, if you keep putting up the numbers, somebody somewhere will notice! Tell son to keep up the good work!
Tough loss tonight. Played the top team in our region. They are undefeated (7-0) in the region and only have one loss overall (13-1). Bballson started, went 5, gave up 4 (1 earned), 10 K's, no walks, scattered 5 singles and a double. Left with a 7-4 lead. Lost in the bottom of the 7th 8-7. Very tough one to take.

We'll keep plugging, hopefully get 'em next time.
