When we made our first ever pilgrimige to Fenway, we had a hot dog on a bun that looked like a regular piece of bread but it was made to act as a bun.

It was very good and I haven't seen one since.

Last night, Rachel Ray on $40/day, on the Food Channel was in Portland, ME and had a lobster sandwich on what looked like the same kind of bread/bun that we had at Fenway.

Is this an East Coast thing? Where can I buy these? They were much better than what I'm used to as a hot dog bun.

Dad04, let's talk, I'd love to get ahold of those buns but not at $3 each.

Gold Glove, a "regular" hot dog bun is flat on the bottom and round on the top kind of like a small loaf of bread. Then it's split lengthwise so the rounded part is one half and the flat part is the other half.

The rounded part is usually bigger so it ends up being asymetrical and might even fall apart if the hot dog is too big.

The East Coast hot dog bug appeared to cradle the dog much better and even tasted better. It was like a nice fresh piece of bread.
Dad04 that Frappe was once called a Coffee Cabinet, if it was coffee flavored of course. They were pretty big in my day.
How many of you know what a Quahog is. And the correct way from this former Bullraker is pronounced Quaw-hawg.
I have had the hot dog buns here in florida, unless Fenway has changed the bread in the last 2 years, its just a bun.
I just thought of this, the buns are really soft like bread because they keep them in steamers (pronounced steama's).
Grinders came from cold cuts that were actually ground up by a butcher back before the 60's. The sandwichs (pronounced sangwichis) were then placed in the oven. No real grinder can be eaten cold. They were always made with italian rolls (pronounced spacadella). Tonic is definitely a Boston thing. My cousins always called Soda....Tonic.
Anybody else got any old new england things, this could get interesting.
I sure hate to disagree with PGStaff, especially because I hope he gets to meet my son in a couple of years.

However, your suggestion to simply wrap a piece of bread around my hot dog...I'm not sure if that's authentic enough.

I'm sure nothing short of a trip to Fenway would make that bun taste just right!

The kids eat them like they are peanutbutter and jelly sandwiches!! ha! My son has been wanting me to make them for the team,...not sure they will go over as well as the good ol' american classic hot dog on a bun, but might be fun just to see the boys reactions! ha! Agree too with soxnole on difficulty finding milkshake/malt or anything similar in Boston/Cape this summer.
Almost as hard as finding true White Sox fans prior to 05 glory run. Just kidding (kinda) - don't know how to insert smily faces on here.
Overall, thought Boston area was fantastic with tons to do and see plus plenty of good food.
As for me and my bride, the best of hot dogs = Nathan's Famous

That's what we are cooking up for the Football game tail gate tonight, and for the Labor Day barbie.

Nathan's has been around a while (since 1916), and it must be the Lamb skin!


There is no way any USA lover of Famous Hot Dogs on Fourth of July will get near the 2006 new world record of gulping 53 and 3/4 hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes!

Jerry's Beer Brat Recipe

Regular brats (no extra stuff in them)

Get grill hot (high on gas grill)

Chop large onion and one green pepper

Add one tablespoon of chopped garlic

Put onion, pepper and garlic in disposable tin pan.

Fill pan at least half full with beer

Put brats on grill and turn several times to brown well. Be careful not to break skin or burn.

Once browned well, put brats in pan with beer and onions. Cover with aluminum foil.

Put pan in low heat grill and let cook for about 45 minutes or more.

Take brats out of pan and put back on grill for just a minute or two.

Put brat on Bun and strain the beer out of pan leaving carmalized onions. Put onions on brat and watch out for burning your mouth on the first bite.

You can skip the peppers and garlic if you don't like them.

If you like brats... you will really like them fixed this way.
Just got finished with dinner with that excellent recipe shared with us by PG Jerry.

Since it's raining here in Vero, we decided to prepare Jerry's magic recipe inside on stove Smile

We used Johnsonville Stadium Style Brats and also used an eight-pack of Oscar Myer Bun Length
hot dogs.

We chose a 6-pack of non-alcoholic beer, O'DOUL'S Premium and Extra Smooth for that part of Jerry's recipe.

We used a frying pan to brown brats and hot dogs before placing them in the brew with the onion, bell pepper and garlic.

Both the brats and dogs came out very tasty according to guests here today and all food was consumed with a little help from pets even though not much was left over for scraps.

I'm going back to publix for more to cook on grill at later date, maybe tomorrow with chicken and steaks, if weather permits.

Just a few weeks ago I had a hotdog in the Chicago Airport. Believe it or not, it was a "Nathan's" Chicago Style Hot Dog.

Can't say it was the best ever, but it was pretty darned good for an Airport dog!

I've always wondered... Is it the condiments that seperate a Chicago Style Hot Dog from all other Hot Dogs? Or is it something else? Confused

I've also been confused with Chicago and New York Pizza. Is one thick and one thin? Here in the farming communities of Iowa, we have both types. We just order thin crust or thick crust.

How does a piece of a cow from Iowa end up being called a New York Strip? Confused
Maybe they only call them New York Style pizzas in other parts of the country?

By the way, I prefer the New York Style to the Chicago Style pizza. Yet, some of the best pizza I've ever tasted was in Chicago. I think it was New York Style pizza.

best Italian San Diego - not a chance compared to New Jersey.

And best Chinese is definitely not anywhere near Boston but rather here in northern california - in San Francisco.

And I will nominate my home town for best Salmon - nothing like a salmon fresh off the boat in monterey bay.
I'm not sure about that Canadian food - best I can come up with is Maple syrup - which is really good but is it really canadian? Vermonter's might argue that one...

And of course with some food there simply is no best ... English food for example... basically there is no such thing as good english food - and therefore there cannot be a best!!!!

And by the way - anytime you are in California, drop me a PM and I will treat you to the best tasting salmon you have ever had (or great chinese food if you prefer!!!!)

Best steakhouse - Sparks on 46th in Manhattan. Peter Luger's in Brooklyn is a close second.

Best corn - sweet JERSEY corn, grown fresh in the Garden State.

AUTHENTIC CANADIAN FOODS: Roast polar bear, boiled reindeer, moose meat soup, sweet pickled beaver, squirrel fricassee, fried woodchuck. Stuffed whale breast, steamed muskrat legs, boiled porcupine, boiled caribou hoofs. Baked skunk, dried buffalo meat, baked salmon, roast or boiled corn, and acorn bread.

Trouble with getting a Chicago Dog, (at the Bear's Den across the street from Wrigley)
is it:

a) If by car, takes 3 hours to get in to downtown, and then three hours to get out.

b) If by plane, try three days! Smile

Ruth Chris's is ok.
McDonald's, however...remains best of breed (say JC)

Wish they all could be Calif girls!

Maryland is a great state, but don't start comparing it to Iowa when it comes to farming. Stick to your crab cakes! (They are good, must admit)

Anyone who has ever had to drive the "scenic" ride through Iowa would understand the farm comments. For those who haven't... If you like to view field after field of corn and beans for hundreds of miles... come on over!
Don't know about Maryland, but the Virginia sweet corn BEATS Iowa sweet corn (that I've had) any day. And the fields and fields of corn in Iowa are field corn (cattle corn) and the beans are soybeans (other cattle feed). I have relatives in Iowa and we had corn, corn, and more corn while there, and I don't know what type - my Uncle would have said that's it's sweet corn (with implications of you're stupid for asking). We have been eating a variety that is called "Frosty" this summer from the local farm stand and it was the BEST sweet corn that I have ever had. It is much better than Silver Queen.
Now for Hot Dog rolls - don't know about that New England stuff, but we are hooked on Martin's Potato Rolls and it HAS to be Martin's. They also make them for hamburgers and for dinner rolls and they make Potato Bread. I personally chewed someone out at work because they brought in dogs and "Potato Rolls" that were some other brand. People jumped on me because they were like "come on he brought them in as a gift". Well, several months later the same guy told me, "Man, you were right. Those Martin's Potato Rolls are the only ones I'll buy from now on." So - It's Martin's Potato Rolls in my book.

Don't know about other areas, but the sweetcorn peak season here is only about 3 weeks. Any other time the corn is fairly average. But if you're here at the right time, you'll be sold forever!

Yes, those are soy beans and field corn you see everywhere. The "Field of Dreams" field was not cut out of sweetcorn but field corn! Sweetcorn, doesn't get as tall!

Iowa used to be called the "Tall Corn State". That made sense! Then the politicians came up with the logo "State of Minds". Confused That did not make any sense!
Huge mazes are cut out of Field Corn! Why waste the sweet corn on a maze? Also the mazes that I have seen are run in the Fall of the year. I think that the farmers might just use the corn from the rows that make the maze paths (maybe that is sold to dem Yan****).
As far as the right time in Iowa, I don't know if I was there during those 3 weeks or not - only remember my Uncle raving about how good the corn was and my cousins chiming in too.
Also, Virginia is a wonderful state that you could have hills, mountains, ocean, sandy soil, rocky soil, spring, summer, fall, and winter, snow and rain, heat, autumn leaves. Yes, some things are better in other states (autumn leaves much better in New England), but only VA and surrounding states (oh yeah, maybe the left coast too) have the variety spread out so evenly. Many people from other states live here and comment on how nice it is here; of course many of these people come here for jobs and that always makes a place nicer than no job.

Why isn't anyone bickering over having the best baloney?!?!?!

Just in case anyone travels through my wonderful state, you might want to try Hot Browns at Ramsey's here in Lexington. The Italian at Papa Leone's in Berea or Joe Bologna (no relation to the meat previously mentioned) here in Lexington is worth a stop too! Yummy!!

Darn, PG I was JUST there a few months ago, wish I knew about that shell gas station!

Can't beat Jersey tomatoes! As far as corn, I never say so many cornfields in my whole life (in Iowa) while on our way to Omaha. Scary almost, corn field after corn field after corn field.

Speaking of which, best steaks out there in Omaha(must be those Iowa corn fed cows) and as far as BBQ, Famous Dave's downtown, THE BEST!

I like Famous Dave’s too, but it’s a chain. Then again so are the Shell Gas stations!

TPM, the corn fields are actually kind of neat in August when the corn is high! Of course, after hundreds of miles of looking at corn fields it takes a little away from the neatness of it all. Boredom then sets in!

We once lived in a house that had corn growing on every side. Bad landscape but very good Pheasant hunting! Speaking of another great American delicacy!

Also, because of all the **** corn, it has been predicted that the next world record "Buck" will come from the state of Iowa! There are so many deer that some places have used snipers to lower the population. Warning... If you ever drive through Iowa, you've got a real good chance of hitting a deer! I mean real good chance!

This thread about East Coast Hot Dog Buns has been a lot of fun. I'm learning a lot about the country reading all this. I might actually share another recipe at some point. Needs to be a Pork recipe! By the way, I think Iowa is the number 1 Pig State! Anyway, it used to hold that title!

I am sure you are aware one has to come up 29 to get to Omaha and I thought I saw lots of cornfields BEFORE I got to Iowa! We even stopped and took pictures in the cornfield! The host organization gave a luncheon for us in a park somewhere on the Missouri River,in Iowa, we had to drive through a maze of cornfields to get to the park, we got lost, mapquest doesn't map out cornfields! Eek
Heading north on 29,in Iowa, one gets off an exit (more cornfields) to get to the city. I am telling husband that Rosenblatt is just a few miles down the road he is saying, yeah sure in the middle of the cornfields? We go over a $1 toll bridge and there is the city in front of us, like OZ, coming out of nowhere! A whole entire city in the middle of CORNFIELDS! For us, coming from a place where vacant land is now extinct, we found it quite ODD! And love those casinos just off (cornfield) highway in Iowa! Here I am thinking Hicksville, USA!
Too bad it gets too cold up there for me!

We stopped in Paducah for a few hours and ate at a McDonld's, next time we'll hit that Shell station!
BTW, had to have one of those fried dough things at the stadium, the best!

Hot fried doughey things? Wonder if those are anything like the fresh fried malasadas from Hawaii,...fried fresh in a huge pot of boiling oil, served blazin' hot, and dusted with the perfect amount of sugar! Eat an entire grease dripping bag of em', right by the beach!!
Ahhh,...no wonder its called paradise,...dude/ette.

Perhaps we should throw in a rockin' Mait Tai with those malasadas,.....at sunset!

If its true that the regional food must be better from its own region, then New York and Chi-town have no pizza that can compare with that of Italy.
I have Real Italian pizza on a regular basis, and Sicilian style as well, compliments of my homegrown Sicilian bride. I have never had pizza in new england, new york or anywhere else that could compare with her's, nor any pasta dish as well.
Best white clam chowder I've ever had is at the Disney's Beach Club hotel, Cape May restaurant, and I'm from new england. The chef there is from Boston.
Over in the town of Celebration there is a tavern called the Town Tavern, owned by a couple of Bostonites. I am told they make great seafood, new england style. Since I don't eat much from the sea, its here-say.
Maine lobster is shipped fresh-frozen all over the country everyday, next day air. So good Maine lobster can be had anywhere these days.
Best dog for me is a R.I. hot weiner, also known as a gagger, yacker or puker. Great stuff. The prep guys actually lay 8-10 buns on their forearms and dress them there.
FrankF, sound like pasta al forno, great stuff. No Iowa for her PG, however if you're in the Orlando area, she would cook for just about anybody. BiggerPapi, yes we can find a spot for the 14 yr old SS, and I can find you a house, I sell real estate and we live about 20 minutes from Disney, year round baseball, great chowder, and my wife's italian cooking.
There's more than one reason I love it here.
When I was in Iowa I ate "Chicken lips" Its breast meat with wing sauce. they also had lippy dogs at the ball park.. I never heard of such things ,but they were delicious. Do they have them in other states?

All the pizza, pasta and "gravy" in NJ is made by Sicilians..using NJ tomatoes And if no body likes NJ why does every body live here?

I went to Fenway two nights ago, Gabbard pitched a GEM!


I had a hot dog as soon as I got there because even though I live in Boston, I was vurious about the rolls.

Lets just say I ordered 1 everytime the hot dog vendor walked by my seat...
