Re: Big League World Series on ESPN Question
Shout to all of the people who applaud the kids who got a once in a lifetime opportunity to play in the Big League World Series on ESPN. I wish my son had played it 2010 when most of the garbage printed here was labeling these kids as rec players. That is totally untrue in 2014F and I am sure it was in 2010. The competition in this tournament was top shelf. There were many players ranked in the top 500 by perfect game and numerous draft picks playing. Many of the players on the 2014...

Re: Aroldis Chapman to sign with the Reds
My first thought when I heard about this deal was that there was all the uproar about Stephen Strasburg's contract demands when he was the #1 pick in the draft, but I'm not hearing the same thing with this guy. Chapman signed for double what Strasburg got, even though most talent evaluators would prefer Strasburg (more polished, more track record, certainty that he's 21, etc). Here's what ESPN's Keith Law had to say about the deal, which is much more eloquent that I could be: "Chapman's deal...

We were recommended to him by a tournament organizer who gave me his card and saqid he would love my son. He did but I couldn't get my son to go to a a college that had weather like ours and was in an out of the way area. I talked to one guy who went there and he didn't stay. Not sure why but it could have been playing time. 2 guys played there 2 years and were drafted and I believe they signed. Another player was cut from my son's D1 and went there. He was a Puerto Rican and he didn't last...

Re: A-Rod To Play on Dominican Team
You all make good points, but it really doesn't make a difference what he does for me, as long as he pays his taxes. Where I live if you ask someone, what are you, they might answer, cuban, haitian, puerto rican, italian, irish, dominican, israeli, indian, catholic, jewish, aethiest, new yorker, whatever, but never, american. Try it sometime. Heritage plays a big part in who someone is. I like Arod, I base what I like on his talent, but he has issues, he can't figure out what he wants in...

Re: high school help?..
Here's the lay of the land from Manhattan: The easy question is the summer tournament teams: The elite teams in the City are the Gothams, the New York Nine and the Bayside Yankees. They don't poach on Little League. The Gothams have a 13U team; the Nine and Bayside start with 15U. All three have very strenuous winter workouts with outstanding coaching. Full attendance at winter workout is normally a prerequisite for a tryout. There are dozens of other teams that range from recreational to...

Not sure why I think this post will soon be erased. With that in mind, I copied it for others to consider. Many times I have posted about the "business of baseball." What is coming for your son is different than anything he has ever experienced before. That is true whether he is drafted and signs, follows his NLI, or follows other options. I wish the very, very best for your son. If you like ruffling feathers, so be it. IMO, there are a lot of very good parents and players who will be trying...

Re: CABA vs USSSA
Excellent tournament. The team from Japan was fun to watch and very good. Lots of chatter on the field and bench, disciplined play in general with solid defense and an emphasis on methodical hitting. Not much power but they know where to go with the ball and execute the bunt very well. Watched them three times and they were rolling. The no hitters they threw were against teams that weren't near as good, anomolies in my opinion. Impressive to watch this guy K something like 19 batters though.

Re: AABC CONNIE MACK WORLD SERIES
I don't mean to be a Debbie Downer, but I just don't see how DBAT or the Tigers hit the ball well enough to not go 2 and Q in Farmington. DBAT got 1 hit off of Trent Appleby, and got shut out by Chase Reid. I wish them the best, but my money is on the Farmington host team, or the always strong Puerto Rican team. Behind the strong fan support of the travelling Puerto Ricans, and the hometown support for the Host team, it will be tough to take the adrenaline out of those kids. However, best of...

UD Women's Softball rescinds verbal offer - another cautionary tale
A friends daughter just had a verbal offer rescinded at University of Delaware. Her story is attached. It is the cautionary tale of what can happen when there is a coaching change and the AD lacks integrity. In this case the player was told that the HC wanted to focus her $'s on pitchers /SS and hitters were not important. ........... Don't get me started on Edgar, I'll never stop! He is, as is almost assured given his quiet, low-key nature, a very underappreciated player! It bugs me every year about this time when HoF voters start saying that Edgar doesn't have the counting stats for Cooperstown (as if "magic numbers" should even really be used), when in fact Edgar is in the Top 100 all-time (currently #80, in fact) in Times on Base (TOB) , and #30 all time among RH hitters. And he did that in far fewer PA than almost...

Re: Would you let your son or daughter play for Bobby Knight?
Here is a brief Bobby Knight recap. In 1974, during a regular-season win over Kentucky, Knight, after a conference and discussion with Wildcat coach Joe B. Hall, slapped Hall in the back of the head after Hall turned to return to his bench. In 1979, Bob Knight was arrested for assaulting a police officer during the Pan American Games in Puerto Rico. Bob Knight was later convicted in absentia in a Puerto Rican court. However, the charges were later dropped when Indiana Governor Otis R. Bowen...

Dtiger, well said. I too got to experience this first hand, back in 1981 at the ripe age of 9 years old and I know exactly what you mean. I was a drafted player and honestly felt like I had tons of pressure on me as I came as a younger player and took over at 3rd base for the regionals and nationals (Farmington and Rockford, IL) back then. The AABC tournaments are absolutely intense and something that every kid should be so lucky to be able to experience. From another thread about the Puerto...

I agree with Midlo Dad. Did he have his best stuff? No. Did he lose the game after an amazing performance by Midlo Son? Yes. But that doesn't mean the criticism should come and put the kid down as if he doesn't belong thought of at the level he is. Re: Dynamic Pepper?
ok, we do a drill similar that was introduced to me as "Puerto Rican Pepper". What we do is mark a strike zone one a wall, net, any background..anyway, each hitter keeps hitting until a ball hits the zone. what we emphasize though is the swing, we focus on the contact point (wrists never break)and "hold the position." what we find is kids get a quantity of swings focusing on just making contact, it goes along with our two strike approach, and really boosts their confidence. they'll make...

There have to be people far more versed at this than I. I can only go on rational thought on this one, not experience. I would talk to the high school coach or someone else with inside baseball knowledge about getting hooked up at a Florida (or other state) junior college where your talent level can get on the field. Then from there you can get exposure to four year colleges. Knowing nothing about Puerto Rican college age summer ball you might want to play in an American collegiate summer...

Throwing money at things will only get you so far. IMO the inner city African American (and other communities) baseball problem comes down to social issues. It is very similar to issues that are present in schools that are located in the poorer neighborhoods of Chicago and every city. You can build new schools, poor money into them all you want...but if there is a broken family in the history of a child he is not going to excel at the same rate as kids from strong families.
