At OPRF...

OPRF 5 - DGN 4 in 8 innings

My hat's off to OPRF who made an incredible comeback, scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the 7th. To the lefty batter, who must have fouled off 3 or 4 great pitches before raking a 3 run HR to tie the game in the bottom of the 7th...

OPRF then pushed the game winner across in the bottom of the 8th. Gotta give them credit, they never gave up.

Downers Grove South sweeps Morton with a 7-2 win on Tuesday. Saturdays score were 5-0 and 7-2. DGS improves to 6-2 in conference and 10-3 overall. Non conference games against crosstown rivals and red hot as well as equally talented Downers Grove North with Dukes of York on Friday. Addison Trail series begin on Saturday.
DGN 12 - Addison Trail 2 in 5.

Tomorrow, a whole lot of kids that I truly like are playing with and against each other when DGN hosts DGS. Both teams are strong this year and it should be lots of fun. I've actually coached more kids from South than from North, so cheering for this one will be complicated.

Good luck to all...let's have some fun.

Mike,

The gane tomorrow is one I always look forward to for the same reasons. I still and only proudly display that first Wasco trophy. What a special baseball talented group of young men, including those who no longer play the game. Unfortunately, I have a prior job related commitment but will be updated by Di or will call you for the "good" news either way.
Props to Glenbrook North for a hard fought 10 (or was it 11) inning victory over Highland Pk. They battled back from an early 6-0 deficit and prevailed 11-9.

There was some bad blood coming into this game, but both teams just played hard, clean baseball today and GBN sweeps the series. Some tremendous relief pitching from both sides along with some great defensive plays.

What I heard from my source was the spark in the DGS dougout came from the decision of DGN to start their #1 pitcher as compared to a fourth starter in a non-conference game. That certainly was a surprise to the the parents as well.

lsc, my guess is that one of the college coaches in attendance came specifically to see the DGN pitcher. They have tried to make it work before, but schedules conflicted. Our guy usually pitches on Saturdays, but the college plays then, and yesterday looked like the best opportunity.

I also think the fact that DGN plays Proviso West this Saturday (no offense intended to Proviso West or their players) made it a move the coach was willing to make so his player could be seen. Now if we were scheduled to play LT this weekend, I'm not so sure the coach would have been as willing to make an accomodation (but I don't know).

I do know that you have a pretty good source in that dugout, but I also doubt the players or the surprised parents actually understood the circumstances of why that particular pitcher was used yesterday.

It doesn't matter. DGS faced an excellent pitcher and won the game. You know I always respect players who want to face the best.

I truly hope the two teams get to play each other again at the end of the season. And I hope both teams are in a position to pitch their top guy at the time.

Continued good luck for the rest of the season (both at DGS and UC),

J.Weaver, thanks for the tip. Although I do have to say that a CB low and away is generally pretty hard to hit for anyone. Unfortunatly, we chose to throw Mr. Culver some other pitches in addition to the CB down and away and he chose to hit those pitches very hard.

Congratulations on your strong start...keep it up. We'll see you on May 10 at your place.

I agree with everything you stated in your reply. Your hopes are the same as mine but that is not surprising. We only we now disagree on the best album ever made. (We will explain what an album is in another post for the young bloods like J.Weaver #5) ...it remains a WHO production rather than a Jethro Tull album about scarey guys on a park bench doing bad things). Remember, "I drive a GS scooter with my hair cut neat, I wear my war time coat in the wind and sea" so I know. Peace to you and your family. Good luck and go DGN!
The headline for the Fremd vs Schaumburg game was the pitching duel of Matt Gailey and Grant Monroe.
Gailey 8 IP 0 runs
Monroe 8 IP 0 runs

Both pitchers got stronger in the 8th. My hat is off to both coaches that had no problem using their bull pen and not abusing the starters arms.

This was a great game and both teams played hard.
