Your son is 12/13/14 (pre-HS). He's pretty good, makes the all star teams, but barely. He's been invited by the area "travel" team to play. Coach is experienced...recognized in the area as one of the better coaches, but explains both in parent meeting and by written summary that this team is built to win tournaments. There will be lots of development in practice and non-tournament games, but when the championship is on the line, he will go for it with the best players he has.

OK, you say, I get it. Great experience to just be on such a team. If son doesn't play, I'll be ok, he'll be ok.

Season begins. Tournaments begins. Oh my! The coach is doing exactly what he said, but your son is not playing much at all in critical tournament games...sometimes not at all. He's the 12th guy on a 12-man roster it seems. On top of that, coach is kind of tough in games (expects a lot), maybe through your rose-colored glasses you also think the coach is wrong about your son's talent level. Son says he's not having much fun and would rather be on more recreational team where he could play. You're realizing maybe AB's are more important than trophies (they're winning those, plenty of them).

What do you do?
