Baseball As It Ought To Be
Baseball As It Ought To Be Posted: August 14, 2013 “. . . a lyric little bandbox of a ballpark.” — John Updike CLOVER HILL — Folks keen to the melding of baseball and the literary muse know that Updike was waxing “lyrical,” as it were, about Boston’s beloved Fenway Park. The great novelist could just as easily have been writing about Buck Bowman Park, aka “The Clover Dome,” west of Harrisonburg. “The Clover Dome” is home to the Clover Hill Bucks of the Rockingham County Baseball League, and...

Re: Under Armour-Baseball Factory
I apologize, but I can't let that go. Call it pride, but there is another top event that everyone in major college and professional baseball knows about! The #1 Showcase event in amateur baseball since 2001 is the Perfect Game National Showcase. It's definitely a "top" event and many MLB high level scouts call it the top event of the year for talent! It is held before all the other showcase events each year in June (right after the draft) usually in a Major League stadium. Last year's draft,...

PJ, Thanks for picking up on that. I admit to bragging in this post, even though my goal is simply honest marketing. I would think that parents reading these posts would be interested to know that I only worked, on a paid consulting level, with a few 5A baseball schools this year: Grapevine, Richardson, Lubbock Coronado, Lubbock Monterey, F.M. Marcus, and Austin Westfield. Each made the playoffs. Obviously I'm just a very SMALL part of each school's success this season, and a school more...

That Univ of Virginia/Okla Univ game was ugly. I can't believe I watched the whole thing. That was the worst game UVA has played all year by far. Congrats to OK for executing their plan, and keeping their foot on the gas. They took the crowd out of it early, and often. We'll see what Coach O'Connor has up...

Redbird, Again - I'm not knocking on the Canes Program at all.....I think it's great what Jeff Petty as been able to do with that program and the exposure he gets for the kids. We even supported their local tournament by playing in it in 2009. And as far as UVA coming to our area - not true - I've seen O'Connor in our area plenty of times.

Re: 17u travel/showcase teams in nova
You kinda are. You say that if you can play, you don't need a showcase team. You said college coaches are paid to come to events (false). You say we play the same teams over and over (false). You say playing time is limited (false). You say many arm injuries are caused by showcases (false). I have as well, but...he didn't just come here on a whim.

It's still early and there will be a lot of names mentioned. But one name floated has been Texarkana College coach Will Bolt. Bolt played and coached at Nebraska. With the move to the Big 10, along with the support of the program and facilities, it is an attractive job where someone will be able to put a lot of wins up quickly. Brian O’Connor, Virginia and Ed Servais, Creighton have also been mentioned. Servais won't leave the school he played at with the new CWS park for the Nebraska job...

Re: Where is the Northeast???.. Not on the Road to Omaha
GWTP-- As it is, the field is already tilted heavily in the Northeast's favor. How does Connecticut get a 2 seed in the Clemson Regional with an RPI of 46? They should be a borderline 3/4 seed. Only by seeding them above Coastal Carolina, which has a higher RPI, and then finding another northeast school (Sacred Heart, RPI 84)) weak enough to be the 4 seed. Same thing with the two Northeast schools that have 3 seeds. St. John's, with its RPI of 54 gets to be a 3 seed in the Charlottesville...

Re: Where is the Northeast???.. Not on the Road to Omaha
Glad you brought it up, not me. I think that they seeded some sites unfairly to create championh$ip matchup$. I mean lets face it Coastal vs Clemson will bring a much larger gate fee than a match up with the other 2. They tried the regional last year up north, 2200 for a championship is nothing. SC probably drew more like 7000+ for the final but for fire regulations they cannot announce. Another thing is that they have given the teams credit and recognition that have VERY difficult schedules...

Re: The road to Omaha
Yes they did, and that was the most exciting college game I've ever seen. Just unbelievable. I knew somehow Coleman would get a hit, the guy is a hitting machine. Shiflett running for Coleman is a no brainer. I thought O'Connor would give Shiflett the green light to try to steal second, but he held him back. Then King, then Gragnini pitch hits for Werman and get 4 straight balls. Then Taylor drives them in. Incredible I'm very, very impressed with the 'Eaters players and their coaches. Heck...

Re: UVA
UVA had them right where they wanted them! Cavs had their two best contact hitters IMO with Coleman and Taylor in the two most crucial situations. Major kudos to them for quality at bats, as well as King and Gragnini for being patient at the plate. I thought O'Connor was going to send the speedy Shiflett to 2nd base to get him in scoring position, but held him back.....patience is a virtue. Just an awesome game to watch as a fan. I can't imagine what it would be like as a parent.

Re: Jamey Shouppe out at FSU
Jamey Shouppe is a hard working, tireless, and outstanding recruiter who we saw many times at events all over the country. He will land on his feet somewhere. I don't know much about his actual coaching ability, but recruiting is the life blood of any successful college program. If you look at the top recruiters every year, you'll find the best future head coaches. In fairness, Hunt is listed as an INF/P. Halley as an OF/P. A quick glance of their individual bios shows the following (no where near complete, I am just listing some highlights): Mayberry was a HS 2X Team MVP, a 2X Team S****r MVP, 2X All-State, and had 100 K's his Senior year in HS. Yorktown 2 Chantilly 1 Junior lefty Daniel Whitaker went all the way for Yorktown. Langley 3 W-L 0 Langley's Robert Hood and Jon O'Connor combine on a no-hitter, Hood going the first 6. The previous night W-L's Austin Evans no-hit McLean through 5 innings and 72 pitches. They relieved him for the 6th and McLean got to the reliever for 5 to win 5-4.
