"Get a backbone and grow a pair" should be the rallying cry for all Red Sox fans. Last year these spoiled players chased away a great manager in Terry Francona because they frankly took him for granted. Enter Bobby Valentine who has been trying to...

Batting practice over-rated?
I thought this was really interesting. Pro ball players and managers strongly disagree with one another about the value of BP before games (Jeter loves it; Valentine hates it). My view is, BP helps, but heck ... I'm still an amateur. NYT - Batting ...

Re: One more - Scott Kazmir
He is very good, especially when he goes up against Boston. I never understood why the Mets got rid of him. It had little to do with ability. I was at a juco game in January 2005. Got chatting with a guy whose son played for one of the teams. Well, he was a Mets minor league instructor in Port St. Lucie, after being the bench coach with Bobby Valentine. After awhile I asked him what happened with Kazmir. I got the company line about Zambrano being a front line starter blah blah.

Very good interview with Valentine. He makes very good points. He even makes suggestions through comparison on how and why the high school game is better attended in Japan as compared to here. http://www.pbs.org/pov/pov2006/kokoyakyu/special_valentine.html

Shortstop Mom; you maybe interested in the Northern California Women's Baseball League http://www.cwbl.net/ We are discussing a International trip to Australia. There is a very serious Woman's baseball program at the National level in Australia. Many years ago, I played against the "All Star" team from the professional Woman's baseball league. The real "Dottie" was on this team and played left field. No, I am not Tom Hanks. Our pitcher and catcher pitched for the lady's and their pitcher and...

I'll sure miss Jon Miller. Morgan, yeah, I guess it might be good for change. Dan Schulman is very good. Valentine is a goof. But he may know his baseball. Herscheiser? I can hear it now... Orel: "Wow, Aroldis Chapman just threw that pitch 103 mph. If that were from a Major League distance, it would be like 275 mph." Dan: "Uh, Orel, we're not in Williamsport anymore."

Re: ESPN Decision
It's hard for me to recall any other announcer whose in-game statements I have repeated along with the comment "that was idiotic" more than Miller. Except for Morgan. Good riddance to both of them. The broadcast with Valentine and Hershiser in the booth during the HoF induction weekend was by far the best of the season.

Re: Best MLB rebuilding moves so far in 2010
The Marlins business model that has been adopted by some teams isn't working this year and what does the owner do? Fires the manager thinking that his friend Valentine will take the job and he won't. They got rid of too many pieces to the puzzle, aren't able to draft the talent they used to, don't develop anymore what they have for it to continue and won't budge on spending anything, didn't even want to contribute for their own stadium. I am sure that Giradi is enjoying it all. And I hope...

The Pirates.... Zach Duke to the DL.........no sense in ruining this fine pitchers arm...let him heal... The call ups of Pedro Alvarez, Jose Tabata, Neil Walker and Brad Lincoln... the demotion of Iwamura.... we may still lose, but Id rather lose with these talented prospects than struggle along sacrificing our meager pitching staff and selling off any talent we have at mid season..... Now we need to get a manager who can get thiese kids playing to their potential....Russell isnt the...

It is honestly cheaper for a Sox fan to fly southwest to BWI, get a rent a car, rent a room and catch a Sox vs Orioles game at Camden Yards over a weekend then to go and catch a weekend series at Fenway!! Plus you can get better seats too at Camden. Went a few years back had an excellent time! Showalter does not make anyone worry about the Orioles playing any better. He is blah..... Re: The Yankees
The drama will continue if they keep losing. They will keep losing if the drama continues. It is a conundrum. I'm not sure I see a way out of this until they start winning, and they lost again to 1st place Tampa Bay last night. Bobby Valentine had some great observations (I thought) last night on ESPN about the Yankee pitching staff. They are throwing Joba out there when they are behind....in an effort to keep them in games. Their starting pitching (Colon and Garcia) are overachieving early...

Re: USA Baseball 14-U and 16-U Tourney
The only national team I can think of at a 16U age group is either the USA Baseball or the Bobby Valentine All American and since the team in question in this thread will play the whole summer then it is likely the Bobby Valentine team. We got an invitation to try out for this team but declined even though it was in our backyard.

Re: Lynn Invitational
Actually the LR at $150 and the free Summer Rivalry Classic and Area Code Tryouts are light years ahead of ALL paid showcases including Top96, Perfect Game, Bobby Valentine, Headfirst, etc etc because someone else has done most of the weeding out forthe scouts and coaches. We just had a coach tell us that they were sending a ooach to watch because of the calibre of competition he will be up against. The challenge with these is to get a Major League scout to notice you and get an invite. Ways...

Re: AMAZED
TR, interesting post. At the time, I agreed with your view. He completely changed that game with that play. This morning I listened to Bobby Valentine. While he did not take away from Damon's play, boy did he provide some commentary on the Phillies, Lidge and their manager. He pointed out how Lidge threw mostly sliders up to the AB with Damon, to get 2 outs. Damon then made him adjust and throw fastballs, not his best pitch. Ran on the slider. When he got to 3rd, Lidge went completely away...

I know of several players in AZ that got the mail. I guess this is an inaugural event so I do not think there will be any history. There is a REACT testing that they are going to have the players undergo. Not sure what it is but maybe related to ??SPARQ. Looks like there will be some MLB/College Coaches and maybe Mr. Bobby Valentine himself. Am still looking into it and...

One of my players forwarded me the email received from the Bobby Valentine All American team. You have to attend the Showcase tryout to make the All American team. So if I had a pitcher throwing 94 as a 16U who was just dominate as can be or players who runs a 6.4 60, 95 from the OF who is 6'3 200 he would not be considered because he did not attend the camp? In reading the email I am just not sure how the whole thing will work. I will wait and see how this plays out over the year. I just...

Hate to get involved with this thread, but there are some things that don't make sense. 1. To my knowledge we have never been contacted by anyone representing the group. As of now, we are not affiliated in any way. 2. For sure there has been no invite to the WWBA Championship in Jupiter. That has not happened. Maybe they don't know how difficult it is to get into that tournament, but I don't understand why they wouldn't contact us before claiming they will be playing in that event. 3. A true...

I will give props when they are due. Please don't try to tell me that scoring 4 in the bottom of the 7th is just being a good team. There had to be some luck. What happen last year...under pressure? Same team less talent (with loss of Wilkinson, Valentine and Ittner)? Should we chalk it up to experience? Just be ready to wear blue on Tuesday and it won't be an upset because you are not deserving right now of earning the title of #1 in the area. Bill

Re: TCIS 2009
Both Swoope boys are starters at Catholic. Each one has contributed to a line up that had only two consistent bats last year (John Leidig and Brandon Valentine). Soph transfer Josh Mason has shored up the defense and offense there as well. Another soph transfer, Kyle Miller adds speed to the lineup and some offensive punch as well.

Re: Talk about 9 lives
It makes me sad because there are a ton of guys out there that really deserve a chance while others get chance after chance and blow it. Smartest move Valentine made was taking away the alcohol from the clubhouse. Baseball players drink (and do managers and coaching staff), and they drink alot, whether they be 31 or 25, alcoholism is rampant.

Re: Bobby V Allstars
I checked their website today. Valentine has basically been stripped from the front page, they have changed the name of the program, and give a bunch of excuses as to why he is no longer involved. Clearly he has a new job, but the program looks to be a huge scam. 400 plus bucks to "tryout"...and if you are picked for the team they charge over 6 grand. They recruit nationally, and from what I can tell from their website, they placed about 10 kids out of over 30 on D1 college teams for the...

This program had a funny feel to it when it was first being promoted. It sounds like Bobby V could have been used by a "friend" to give instant credibility to a new program with "lofty goals." Goes to show you what people will do for their sons well being. $400 for tryouts had to be the first warning sign. Concerning Valentine managing the Sox, and having experienced him with the Mets, wait until you guys up in New England get a load of some of the things he will do. It will have you shaking...

Re: Yu Darvish
I don't think the Red Sox and Yankees got pushed to the kiddie table. The Red Sox picked up two quality relievers while losing only one and the Yankees picked up two starting pitchers. If Valentine can eliminate what caused the Red Sox to fold in September (it wasn't about talent) they will be right in the chase again.

Re: Yu Darvish
I'm a great fan of Mariano Rivera, but we all know that sooner or later--probably sooner at his age--he is going to fall off the cliff. Every great reaches that moment and you can bet, just from observing how the Yankees are handling Jeter's decline as well as they kind of stretched out Posada's, the Yankees will do it again with Mo and probably cost themselves a pennant. The Yankees are considered to be pretty ruthless, but they are still often ruled by tradition or fan opinion as in the...
