Re: Future of University of Maryland Baseball

Larry, Thank you for the kind words. He is doing ok, selective hitter who gets himself in hole too much but hopefully he will learn and make adjustments and cut down on the K's. Goal now is to get healthy and return in 3/4 weeks and make a small contribution to the team. As I told Bear, the player to watch is Charlie White, when the year is done I'm betting he is a team leader in a lot of offensive categories and his defense is outstanding (has a cannon for an arm).

all322 Don't assume that Larry doesn't know what it takes to compete. He has coached for a long time and has expereinced 1st hand the changes in attitude/expectations/dedication in players over the years. He never said that the kids in question should be "happy" and accept their fate. There is a reason these kids are not playing and rather than complaining maybe they need to reevaluate their positions. Are they expecting too much too soon in terms of playing time? Do they have things they...

One of the 'quietest' HS baseball games that I have seen considering the come from behind St John's victory (Howard show) over a poor Good Counsel defense. But that was not the buzz around the stands at the ball park. It appears Tori Finucane (and her Dad) have left GC and are enrolled at O'Connell. GC admin and AD would not meet the demands of Mr. Finucane (he wanted to call his soon to be 16 y/o daughter's (Soph) pitches..... from the dugout!)! And Dad knows there is a 365 day 'penalty'...

I have decided to jump in on this thread to offer up my take on this subject. It's a good question; Our family is going through this same process too. We have talked also about the "college experiance" and the fact that college at 18 and college at 26 are two very different experiances. Agreed...it's new territory. Three weeks ago, I would have been on the side of not betting against the guy either. But, he's shown a much more human side to him that I can't see how it would not affect him on the golf course. Time will tell. But I wouldn't underestimate the impact on other golfers who will no longer think the guy walks on water.

Okay .... I'm going to jump in here: Let me preface my comments by saying that Kent Mathews is friend of mine, so I may have a better understanding of where he is coming from and what he meant when interviewed. And of course my view will be slanted as well. First - Kent is a baseball guy and not a polished speaker, or a person used to being interviewed. The question asked of Kent was if the 2005 team was as good as the last couple. Kent answered honestly that it probably wasn't. He did not...

I am rarely a betting man, but I would bet that someone out there somewhere, could pull it off. The player would be a rare breed. I think that hitting would be the hardest thing to learn. I see it like computer games. When I play against the toughest that the computer or Wii can do, I beat it everytime. When I go online or play against my son, I am a dead man. Live experience against live people is a heck of a lot harder than any simulation or training.

I haven't found anything definite yet. I did see an article in the SDSU newspaper stating that he would "likely pitch Friday night against TCU." I do know that he last pitched Saturday against BYU; he went 7 innings and there has been no mention of an injury. So, every indication is that he will pitch tonight. I'm betting on it and will be there with multiple layers of clothes on! It'll be interesting if he can hit 100 mph in these conditions - I have my doubts.

Many have said that stats mean very little. In fact, I am one who has said that. However, when I mention stats mean very little, it’s meant to refer to scouting. The only stats that can have a bearing on scouting or recruiting are bad stats. E.G. hitter graded high in power… has no HRs in high school season. Pitcher with a great arm has very few strikeouts and gives up lots of hits in high school season. Certain stats can cause concern from a scouting standpoint. The truth is that stats are...

Tebow was good for the NFL and the Broncos in particular. They were dead in the water before he took over and he lead that team to a reasonable good season. Regardless of whether he is the prototype QB, the players got behind him for a good run. I wish him well and know that he will struggle finding success in the NFL. Still, I'm betting he will be successful in LIFE.

Really the Rose and Joe Jackson banishments have nothing to do with if they made more money than PED users or whether kids will gamble because players do. It all goes back to the basic fabric of professional sports. Are the games on the level? It was a major deal when that NBA referee was found to have been betting on games and he certainly affected the outcomes of playoff games. Jackson took money to throw the 1919 World Series. Ask, but generally there is a time expectation that they will share with you. Make the decision as quickly as you are comfortable knowing the time limits they set. Yes, wait too long and you run the risk of them moving on. It's kind of like considering which girl to ask to the Prom. Wait too long and another decision has been made and she is now unavailable. Every decision in life carries risk. Only you can answer that one. Betting "on the come" has always carried steep odds.

RJM, I agree. Heck, my daughter was very tall at a young age. I was once the head coach of 3 sports at the same time of which one was girl's basketball. She could go between her legs, spin move, ... She was good at the 3 point shot and could make layups with both hands. However, watch out. When she was in 5th and 6th grades, and at my varsity basketball practices, she would sneak outwith my keys and go upstairs to hit softballs in the cage. I'd hear the sound and know exactly where she was.

I like the Fielder-Kinsler trade for Detroit. It provides an upgrade at 2B a defensive upgrade at 1B, and a huge defensive upgrade at 3B. I'm high on Nick Castellanos, the organization's top prospect, and think he will hit his way into that lineup. This opens up a lot of options financially for the organization to fill some holes or to pay some of their top players who are nearing free agency. I don't really understand the deal from Texas's perspective. Mike Napoli is pretty much as valuable...

When I saw the Fielder trade my first thoughts were Texas did Detroit a huge favor. The Tigers got out from under a horrible contract. Fielder wasn't producing. He should have 125+ rbi's this year. He's done nothing in the post season. Add on with his body he could be an early thirties redeux of Mo Vaughn. Long term contracts for bad bodies are extremely risky. I disagree on Beltran. While he has a good arm he's no longer a good fielder. He can't handle Fenway's right field. This doesn't...
