Baseball As It Ought To Be Posted: August 14, 2013 “. . . a lyric little bandbox of a ballpark.” — John Updike CLOVER HILL — Folks keen to the melding of baseball and the literary muse know that Updike was waxing “lyrical,” as it were, about Boston’s beloved Fenway Park. The great novelist could just as easily have been writing about Buck Bowman Park, aka “The Clover Dome,” west of Harrisonburg. “The Clover Dome” is home to the Clover Hill Bucks of the Rockingham County Baseball League, and...

Exhaled now.......... Thanx for these notes. There has certainly been plenty of time to "prepare", so there's no angst here. Headed out the door...but before I leave...I would like to say, any PLAYER that can catch 8 full innings behind the dish in very hot and humid weather ala Chandler Stadium in Atlanta right now, go 3 for 4 with a monster homerun, two singles and a walk(on base all day long)....Go out to bullpen, warm-up, come back to mound from bullpen in ninth...pump 93-95MPH fastballs with 84-85MPH power sliders....shut 'em down and get the save... THAT PLAYER IS TALENTED AND WORTHY !!! Furthermore, I am...

I've got mixed emotions over the whole story. I got to talk from time to time with Josh when he was playing A ball her in Charleston. Very nice guy...great with the kids...so it was a shocker that he hit the roadblocks like he did. Yes, his family traveled with him. Andy, if you think about it, there may have been a reason for that, because his problems started when they let him on his own. They may have known that he had potential for destructive behavior, and were trying to keep him out of...

Bet the Mariners wished they had Wieters to compliment the 21 pitchers they drafted this year. They will need a big strong bodied catcher in the very near future to help catch this long list of 6'3" or taller group of pitchers Maybe 2007 they will be fortunate enough to draft him. Maybe not the best team that day but as time has past maybe the one of the best ever. Here is a Where are they Now. Robert Ray: TX A&M...

Some excellent posts on here. Having gone down the college baseball recruiting path with two sons, neither of which found their way on to the ACC/SEC Blue Chip track, some observations: 1. Like life, it really isn't always fair. Certainly there are no guarantees. You will see players get big time attention that seem to be an awfully lot like other players not getting such notice. Accept that it happens and don't let it discourage you. You can't control what the scouts see, or don't see. 2.

Re: Baseball pants...

Great comments. Thanks! Like I said, pants are a sore spot and as my son was thumbing thru the many baseball magazines we get, he saw one player who had altered the bottom so they fit over his cleat. No elastic. Kinda like a bell bottom. So...there I am with my sewing machine trying to copy the pants in the magazine. I thought maybe if he saw it in "real life" he wouldn't like it...darn it, he loved it. I was his "hero" and now he wants all his pants done that way!!! (I think I've created a...

Well, son made his first college pitching appearance on Sunday! What crazy emotions to go through. He’s been fortunate to be a starter in his HS career, so being a bullpen parent was a new experience. It was like having the comic devil & angel sitting on your shoulder. One is telling you to cheer on the...
